Bomb Squad Instrumentals - '07/08 Special!

It's taken some time for me to post this, as I was waiting for a tracklisting from Bobby Hill - but he never got back to me so I'm just going to go ahead and post this. If you're as big a Public Enemy/Bomb Squad fan as I am, you won't be too pressed for a tracklisting. Every New Years Eve/Xmas Eve time, DC's local community Jazz station WPFW 89.3FM goes all out. Bobby Hill hosts this show called The Other Side Saturday nights, and he has been doing an instrumental PE/Bomb Squad special every year since 1990 or something. It's the coolest thing ever, and still do this day it's my favorite thing on the radio all year.

So, sorry for the delay and lack of tracklisting this time around - but any fans of PE or Bomb Squad productions in general (Ice Cube, YBT, Son of Bezerk, Terminator X etc.) will love this. I split the 3-hour special up into 3 1-hour chunks for easy digestion. Please grab them and bump them loud! Much love to Bobby Hill and the entire WPFW/Pacifica family for keeping this show on the air so many years. Love it.

(And for those who missed my Bomb Squad Other Side special post last year, you can check the archives here: http://itscomingoutofyourspeaker.blogspot.com/2007/07/bomb-squad-instrumentalsb-sides-dc.html)

Various Artists - Dub Xperience - The Dread Operators: An On-U Sound Compilation
Label: Cherry Red - Cleopatra Records
Record date: 1981-84
Album Style: Dub, Experimental, Lee Library, Roots, UK Stylee

From beginning to end, this album is packed with great dub, roots, and early dancehall recorded between 1981 and 1984. There isn't the over-production and/or over-experimentation that plagues some On-U Sound releases, and neither is there the generic sound that plagues others. This is just good old-fashioned reggae in all its glory. Creation Rebel and Singers & Players dominate Dub Xperience, each contributing 4 strong tunes. Creation Rebel's "Independent Man," a cover of Bob Andy's "Unchained," may be the best song here, with its classic, emotional roots melody and driving bass, while "Chemical Specialist" -- the dub version of Jah Woosh's fun "Woodpecker Sound" (in which he mimics a woodpecker's call) -- and "Eugenic Device" are inventive dubs. Singers & Players meanwhile contributes the solid early dancehall chatting style and simple drum and bass rhythm of "Autobiography" alongside 3 airy roots numbers: "Breaking Down the Pressure," "Make a Joyful Noise," and the Congos-esque "Moses." Easily the best of the 3 albums in the On-U Sound Box set (along with In Dub Daze and A Party of Dubbers and Toasters). ~reggae-reviews.com

Various Artists - In Dub Daze: An On-U Sound Compilation
Label Cherry Red - Cleopatra Records
Record date: 1981-84
Album Style: Dub, Experimental, Lee Library, Roots, UK Stylee

Collecting together Adrian Sherwood-produced dubs recorded between 1981 and 1984, In Dub Daze was released in 1996 and then re-packaged in 1999 with A Party of Dubbers and Toasters and Dub Xperience: The Dread Operators as the On-U Sound Box. In Dub Daze is the most experimental, with only about half of the tracks being traditional dub or reggae. Much of this album is influenced by the early '80s New Wave and electro-funk scenes -- "Feeling Wild" and "Technical Miracle" by Voice of Authority being examples of the former and "Stopping and Starting" by Voice of Authority and "Parasitic Machine" by Alan Pellay of the latter. Of the more traditional dub cuts, Creation Rebel's "Rubber Skirt" -- which utilizes the music from John Holt's "Love I Can Feel" -- and "Painstaker," along with Singers & Players' "Alla la Dreadlocks Soldier" -- featuring Prince Far I -- are the best. ~reggae-reviews.com

Skin, Flesh & Bones Meet The Revolutionaries - Fighting Dub
Label: Hot Pot
Record date: 1975
Album style: Dub, Lee Library, Roots

Originally recorded in 1975 and released on the Love Label, the album is reissued here in its entirety. Most of the tracks were laid at Randy’s studio, and subsequently mixed at Joe Gibbs studio by the late Eroll ‘ET’ Thompson. The original album features dub cuts of many of Lloyd’s Campbell’s hits up that time, including “Dread Out Deh”, “Jacket”, “Won’t You Come Home”, “First Cut Is The Deepest” and others.

Listening to the album with hindsight, it can be seen as a blueprint for the ‘rockers’ sound developed by Sly Dunbar at Channel One in the period shortly after its release. In fact, Lloyd was to work consistently with Sly and the Revolutionaries throughout the late 1970s. Along the way, he helped Donovan Germain make his first records, Joy White’s “Love Is A Message” and Ronnie Davis & the Itals “Equality & Justice”. Lloyd carried Germain to Treasure Isle studio and helped arrange the songs - both do-overs - using the Revolutionaries. It was also during this period that Lloyd first worked with Glen Washington, recording him on a version of “Tighten Up” which was released by Nationwide Records in the UK in 1976. In latter years, after Glen had scored massive hits with the late Clement Dodd, Lloyd renewed his association with the singer and to date has recorded four big-selling albums with him. ~cookingvinyl.com

Prince Far I - Dubwise
Label: Virgin
Record date: 1979
Album style: Dub, Lee Library, Roots
Notes: This is Cry Tuff Dub Encounter II w/ bonus tracks 1-8.

DUBWISE features the entirety of the original CRY TUFF DUB ENCOUNTER PART 2, with the bountiful addition of eight bonus tracks. Prince Far I's dub productions here, with the Revolutionaries laying the rhythms, are among the most satisfying of the genre.

All fading and echo effects are used in an organic fashion to accentuate the infectious rhythms; the mixing evolves throughout the pieces to literally form songs. An African feel within the fluidity of the CRY TUFF tracks is reflected in the titles themselves. Among the bonus tracks are three vocal numbers, including "Jah Do That," which is one of Prince Far I's mightiest deliveries--militant, and inspirational. ~cduniverse.com

WCVT 89.7FM Towson: Follow Up by Stacy Meyn

(FYI: Stacy's is the voice heard on my WCVT tape, posted earlier here)
((thanks, Stacy))

Happy New Year, y'all!

It's been a few weeks of enjoyable back and forth with Steve, which also rekindled electron herding with Roberta [Cowan] and Linda [Cashell]. We're hunting down old air-checks in hopes of adding to the rips. Pamela [DeVier] and DJ Neska might have some too—as far as I know, Neska is the WCVT tape master, claiming at one point to have a wall's worth of shelves brimming.

Large greetin’s to Skizz and PJ—pleased to read both are alive and seemingly well. I haven’t been in the Charm City area for nearly a decade, having flit off to the Left Coast for employment opportunities. Hard to fathom that it’s been over two decades since I showed up at Towson [State] University with my Depeche Mode t-shirt and an insatiable desire to work in radio.

From 1987 to 1991, I had the distinct pleasure of being on various late night shifts—there was nothing like the thrill of seeing all the phone lines light up as I headed into the booth to start the program. I was honored to speak with many listeners from near and farther away than our transmitter should have been capable of reaching. I’ll never forget the gentleman who thanked me for “bringing intelligence to the airwaves.” Although there were and still are plenty of times when I ain’t bright, I’ll always appreciate that comment.

Thanks also to all of the aforementioned folks for expanding my music base—indeed there was so much more than Mr. Gahan and co.! Many of us would go on to work at An die Musik and expand our collections after the demise of WCVT. Now before anyone spits on me for listing WTMD (maybe someday I’ll tell the Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel story), I did get to cover a few shows of the long-running and much-loved Cosmic Music Experience, before that too, finally went off the air. I am told that even WHFS, at the time the last bastion of “progressive music”, gave up the ghost and submitted to a format change. Sigh.

On a much happier note, there is Steve and his dedication, affording us a chance to revisit better audio times. I am astounded that after all these years, WCVT is so well-remembered and regarded. I count myself among the fortunate who got to share in making station history and I am grateful for the friendships that still thrive. Yeah, yeah, group hug and insulin shot forthcoming!

Cheers,

--Stacy

Anyone else from 'CVT who wishes to post some follow-up thoughts, feel free. That tape was the reason I started my first blog - so that I could put that out there, and without that tape, I probably wouldn't have ever thought about starting a music blog. And now look how big this one has gotten..... you can email me directly to send correspondence and I'll gladly post it up!

Scientist

Scientist, born Overton Brown in Kingston, Jamaica, 1960 (and also known as Hopeton Brown), was a protégé of King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock), one of the originators of dub music. He left King Tubby’s studio at the end of the 1970s and became the principal engineer for Channel One Studio when hired by the Hoo Kim brothers.
He came to prominence in the early 1980s and produced many albums, his mixes featuring on many releases in the first part of the decade. In particular, he was the favourite engineer of Henry "Junjo" Lawes, for whom he mixed several albums released on Greensleeves Records. He also did a lot of work for Linval Thompson and Jah Thomas. In 1982 he left for Tuff Gong to assist Errol Brown. He then emigrated to the Washington, D.C. area in 1985, again to work in studios as a sound engineer.

Many fans came to know his music due to half of his album 'Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires' being used on the soundtrack for the popular videogame Grand Theft Auto III. The tracks on the fictitious radio station 'K-Jah' are composed entirely of songs from this album. However, Scientist received no royalties for this and sued Rockstar Games unsuccessfully in a US court. The court ruled that according to precedent a recording mixer was not considered the author of a musical work, and so Rockstar were correct to treat the producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes as the copyright holder of the album.

This ruling could be argued to neglect the fundamental difference between dub-reggae and other kinds of music - after all, the album is marketed as 'Scientist rids the world of the evil curse of the vampires': so the publishers and self identified licensors are prepared to attribute authorship to Hopeton Brown when it suits them, but not when it comes to paying him royalties. It can, however, be argued that Scientist was introduced to a much larger audience as a result of the licensing of his album to Rockstar, in which case he may have sold more albums as a result.

Scientist also tours from time to time as a band engineer and producer for the reggae acts that he is currently promoting. His wildly creative artistic style has resulted in the destruction of loudspeakers in the venues where he was controlling the sound balance. As a result, Scientist has been banned from touching the sound equipment in several San Francisco and New York City clubs and studios. ~wikipedia

Scientist - Dub In The Roots Tradition
Label: Blood And Fire
Record date : 1976-79
Album style: Dub, Lee Library, Roots

Another compilation of dubs appearing for the first time ever on album. Producer Don Mais enlisted the talents of the 17-year old Scientist to mix the dub versions for his Roots Tradition label's B-sides. The cuts collected here present a fascinating insight into the young Dubmaster's early efforts, while the rhythms themselves, some played by an embryonic version of Roots Radics, mark the transition point from the reggae styles of the seventies into what would become known as dancehall. ~bloodandfire.co.uk

King Tubby - Soundclash Dubplate Style Vol. 1 + Vol. 2 (vocals + dubs)

Photobucket Photobucket

King Tubby - Soundclash Dubplate Style Vol. 1 + Vol. 2 (vocals + dubs)
Label: Sonic Sounds
Record date : 1985-89
Album style : Dancehall, Digital Dub, Lee Library, Tubby
Notes: Released approximately 1990; this is by far the best collection of soundbwoy tunes. Live recordings from dubplates with intros by the legendary Fuzzy Jones!

KING TUBBY and THE FIREHOUSE REVOLUTION

By the early eighties dub was no longer perceived as a cutting edge music and its innovations had long been assimilated into the musical mainstream. Tubby realised that the days of his now classical production techniques were over and decided to take a new step: in 1985 he build a new studio in the heart of the Kingston ghetto, the Waterhouse District. During the run up to elections gunshots would echo throughout the neighbourhood with such alarming frequency that the area was renamed FIREHOUSE by its local residents. The new studio there was then equipped with lots of new technology like a bigger mixing desk - and digital synths and drum machines.

After the studio-producer Professor went to the USA to study electronics and computer Peego and Fatman followed and a man named Phantom, who built riddims at Channel One before. The sound they created is - especially from today's point of view - a completely new dimension of reggae and dub: it's 100% bone-dry digital music (due to the sound of the machines used for production) but it's also a pure, hypnotical and new form of dub, a paradox really. It took a while for me to like that special sound, but then the tracks are made to play them loud at sound systems and when I heard 'SOUNDCLASH DUBPLATE STYLE', THE classic digital King Tubby-LP, loud it got to me. The bass is extremely powerful and kicking while the drums gain a completely new quality, simply because they all of a sudden were not shuffling anymore but set straight to a beat grid. These releases have been highly influential for what we're doing here at JAHTARI and we picked up the trail from there!

The first big hit for Tubby with his new studio was Anthony Red Rose's 'TEMPO', a riddim versioned over and over until today and many other promising 7inches followed. While Tubby did a completely different approach on music and the whole marketing side of it than Jammy (music being always in the focus for him and no compromises were made for that!) also commercial success came and SOUNDCLASH DUBPLATE STYLE sold 45.000 worldwide. But then in 1989 the day came and this whole promising process stopped - when King Tubby was shot down in front of his house, the killer was never found. And with Tubby's death - this can be said from today's perspective - the complete history of Reggae and Dub as we knew it ended and was replaced by RAGGAMUFFIN.

Strangely enough Tubby and Jammy themselves (especially Jammy's 'PUNAANY' by Admiral Bailey) paved the way for that and established the rhythms. But in the end Raggamuffin and its 100% mass-market oriented productions cut the last connections to Reggae and Dub and sold out their musical heritage. After Tubbys death, his daughter ran the studio then, the firehouse crew produced some more fine music, but without a guy like Tubby holding everything together that soon went down too. ~

Various - Watch How The People Dancing: Unity Sounds From The London Dancehall

Various - Watch How The People Dancing: Unity Sounds From The London Dancehall
Label: Honest Jon's Records
Record date: 1986-89
Style: Dancehall, Digital Dub, Lee Library, UK Stylee

This excellent set compiles the output of Unity Sounds from the years 1986-89, and is a typically diverse and well selected Honest Jon’s release. Produced in conjunction with the man who started the London based label, Rib’s, Unity Sounds specialised in the mid eighties birth of Dancehall, not the gun toting Hip-Hop influenced Dancehall of modern Jamaica, but sublime digital Reggae that has been hugely influential on artists like Rocker Hi-Fi and Rhythm & Sound, whose Moritz Von Oswald has remastered this material.

Selah Collins “Pick A Sound” begins proceedings with its "version" following (as are most cuts on the album). Check the bass on Kenny Knots “Watch How The People Dancing”, its deep rhythm is stunningly hypnotic, elsewhere “Ready For The Dancehall Tonight” from the fabulously named Peter Bouncer is even better, with a timeless quality and tidy vocal melody.

Other highlights include Mikey Murka’s “Back Your Automatic” and another Kenny Knots slice of brilliance, “Ring My Number”. Add to this excellent music liner notes that take the length of the album to read, making the listening experience also an invaluable history lesson, especially when most of material included is obscure and certainly unavailable anywhere else.

'Watch How The People Dancing' is a truly essential release for any Reggae fan - the music inspirational and surprising, and unlike many Reggae re-issue labels, it is not a rehash of classic material released too many times on too many formats. Honest Jon’s obviously love the music they release and you, the reggae fan, undoubtedly will too. Recommended. ~warprecords.com

Various Artists - 2 Heavyweight: Another Blood & Fire Sampler

Photobucket

Various Artists - 2 Heavyweight: Another Blood & Fire Sampler
Label: Blood And Fire
Record date: 1973-79
Album style: Deejay, Dub, Lee Library, Roots, Vocal

Another Blood & Fire Sampler sampler featuring seven cuts that are exclusive to this compilation. These include an extended mix of I-Roy's 'Superfly', an I-Roy exclusive, the Leonard 'Santic' Chin production 'Late Hour', and another Santic track, the Tubby-mixed 'Shooter Dub'. From the Striker Lee camp comes a long unavailable Jah Stitch toast 'Jah Help The Dread'; fellow Greenwich Farm producer Don Mais supplies Phillip Fraser's 'You're No Good', the original vocal to the track 'Dub Livity' which appears on Dub In The Roots Tradition. This is presented 'discomix' style, Scientist at the control tower. Lastly, two newly-discovered mixes of two tracks from the Black Ark classic 'Heart Of The Congos', never-before released: the songs are 'La La Bam-Bam' and 'The Wrong Thing'. The remaining nine tracks are from the last eight releases - BAFCD 009 through BAFCD 016 - on Blood and Fire.

The Blood and Fire series has taken the standard of reggae compilations to a new level. Tasteful packaging and unblemished sound quality (re-mastering) exemplify the quality of dub music they showcase. However, for many, the music remains something of an unknown quantity, many of the artists featured in the series having either faded into obscurity or died. Careful not to isolate potential fans, this mid-price compilation is a re-introduction to original bu'n down Babylon music. Names such as King Tubby, Scientist and Prince Jammy give the sampler enough classic material to make a Motown collection jealous. With nine tracks from the last eight releases, and seven exclusives, this sampler is the perfect introduction. ~bloodandfire.co.uk

WCVT [89.7FM TOWSON] WILL NEVER DIE.

...not as long as I keep reposting my tape rip. I see that the download links for the tape rip are still active, so might as well bring this one back. Especially after chatting with Skizz, PJ Dorsey and Stacy Meyn as a result of my original WCVT post - all of which made my day, that particular day. Hey guys!

Like this lovely little text from Stacy I received just a couple weeks ago really got me amped up about reposting...

Mine is one of the voices on your recordings. Wild to hear again. Thanks so much for sharing those--Roberta Cowan (who also worked at the station) gave me the headsup about your blog.
I'm happy to answer your questions--what a trip down the proverbial memorex lane...
I should compose a post--would be nice to say hi to PJ and Skizz--it's been forever.
Cheers,

--Stacy

WCVT 1987-1991 and briefly in 1992-1993 after it had become WTMD (spit spit)

Spit Spit indeed. WTMD took over and with it came a flood of poor programming. I'd almost rather have DEAD AIR then to hear the boring adult contemporary bullshit that filled up the 89.7 frequency gap in my fm dial weeks later. Horrible. With this post revival comes a cool article I came across. Hailing from The Towerlight, the article quotes Skizz and puts everything into perspective re: the WTMD takeover...

140 Years: Towson's Story | 11/15/06

After decades of strengthening education, advancing athletics, and campus expansion, Towson finally found its voice in 1976 when the campus' FM radio station hit the airwaves.

WCVT-FM was born in a unique time for radio. According to general manager Steve Yasko, the University-owned public radio station started broadcasting just one year after the Sony Walkman was created and just a few years before music television and streaming on the Internet.

"[Technology's] totally changed everything," Yasko said. "Its totally changed the way we think of our business models. Its totally changed the way that we think about how we provide services and what we are as a radio station."

Towson State College's first huge change at the radio station happened at 6:16 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, 1976, as reported by The Towerlight on Feb. 20, 1976. The College Media Center was flooded with excited students and station supporters as "Bop City Revisited" became the first song to play on the new frequency, 89.7 FM.

At the event, The Towerlight recorded then-President James Fisher when he said, "In the end, this will benefit our academic program, the students, and ultimately the greater community."

WCVT-FM put Towson radio in a new frequency, but it wasn't the campus' first station. The station originally opened in the fall of 1971 as WVTS-AM, according to the 1976 article. It didn't take long before business manager Mark Silvert and general manager Steve Curran were thinking bigger, but the two were three years shy from turning their AM reality into their FM dream.

All according to The Towerlight article, there were four requirements Silvert and Curran had to meet before the station could become FM, and two problems were encountered during the evolution process.

The first step in moving from AM to FM is finding a spot on the frequency. When WVTS thought it found the perfect radio band, Morgan State beat Towson State in receiving it. WVTS had to start again. It eventually found a home at 89.7, where Towson University's station WTMD presently remains. Then the station had to find lawyers, buy equipment and get Federal Communication Commission approval.

The work proved worthwhile when by the end of the first week, Curran said operations for the 1,850-watt station were running "really smooth."
"We set program schedules up well in advance of our going on air to minimize problems," Curran told The Towerlight.

The station, according to the 1976 edition of Tower Echoes, ran 18 hours per day, seven days per week playing a format of classical, pop, rock, progressive, jazz, and educational affairs programs.

Despite a format switch over in 1991, when the station with new call letters WTMD focused more on educational value than music played, Skizz Cyzyk, TU alum who worked at WCVT-FM in the 80s, said music was mostly a main focus for the station.

"I was gone by the time it became WTMD," Cyzyk said. "They hired a professional program director, Jim Armstrong. It was always a student election before that. They did things to weed out the music lovers and just have more communication majors on the air."

Cyzyk said he was one of the last of the station's "music lovers" and the WCVT was hard to listen to with the music played on it. Cyzyk described the switch in format and music to WTMD, originally an acronym for Where Towson Makes a Difference, as "earth shaking" for the students who previously ran the station.

"It used to be that local bands would make a demo tap and we'd play it, and they'd have a hit," Cyzyk said. "It was a sad day" when that ended.

But Cyzyk still carries the overall experience. WCVT introduced him to The Flaming Lips, which is still one of his favorite bands. He also spoke of working at the station as a great experience because he helped introduce bands like The Pixies, The Replacements, We Might Be Giants, and bands "nobody heard on the airwaves in Baltimore unless they were listening to CVT."

Even today, Cyzyk is working on a documentary about a singer he first heard at WCVT. "That's how much of an impact CVT had on my life," he said.

Clearly it had a big impact on my life as well, and I wasn't even directly involved. I just wish I had taped more 'CVT while I had the chance. Oh well. Thank the Lard (another band I heard first on WCVT!) this one tape came out just right ;)

So here's the original post...

WCVT 89.7 FM Towson - Industrial Show [1990]

* This one tape is the only record I could find anywhere of this obscure radio show ever existing. If ANYONE reading this knows anything about WCVT or this Industrial show from Friday nights around late-80s/'90/'91 - please let me know. I'm dying to locate more recorded shows from that station, since they disappeared into thin air without warning :( RIP WCVT

When I was in 8th Grade, I went over to a neighbor’s house and asked if I could have this broken solid-state AM/FM receiver that was sitting in the garage. I took it home, took it apart, cleaned up all the connections and re-sautered ones that were loose. I put it back together, plugged it in and was ecstatic to see the soft amber backlit glow of the FM dial. After searching the FM range slowly for about 2 weeks, looking for signs of life in between the main stations - I finally came across something faint that really sounded strange. It was *just barely* picking up the signal from 89.7FM, Towson MD’s extremely indie college radio station. The call letters were WCVT - and I happened to stumble upon it late one friday night, during the weekly experimental/industrial show. I had to get better reception to figure out what the f*ck they were playing!

My brother had an old GE boombox that he gave me - looked like a piece of shit, but it worked. He said it picked up WHFS really well, so I gave it a shot. Low and behold, this thing had a ’sensitivity boost’ switch that would give a significant boost to the FM reception. I was thrilled to see that this GE boombox picked up the WCVT reception almost perfectly, if the antenna was in a very specific position. Come that next friday night, I tuned in at midnight and listened to this show in its entirety. I was in 8th Grade, and this random find had literally changed my life forever. I had already gotten into heavy metal and punk via my older brother and some local older neighborhood kids, so Industrial/experimental music logically was the next step in my progression. I was able to record ONE tape’s worth of magic from one particular week’s show; two weeks later I tuned in, and there was just white noise instead of music. I was completely crushed - but a week later the reality sank in. I desperately tried to tune in, only to become horrified at the sound of smooth jazz and adult contemporary where WCVT once was. Seemingly overnight, funding for WCVT was cut - forcing them to kill their transmitter, and also leaving opportunity for this horrible adult contemporary station to snatch up the bandwidth like an evil hermit crab.

Upon further research, I realized that their transmitter operated at a very low wattage - something like 5 kwatts. People in Baltimore had trouble tuning in to WCVT, and Towson is less than an hour away from Baltimore. Yet somehow my GE boombox picked it up clearly, and I live almost 2 hours distance from Towson. To this day, I still see this chance encounter as some weird act of divine intervention so that I could be exposed to all this insane underground music.

Just ripped the original WCVT tape yesterday, and it's got a little radio noise and skips around a little, but who cares. I dare you to find me another WCVT Towson recording anywhere online. They don't exist! The contents of my tape include music from Godflesh, Clock DVA, Motor Morons, Helios Creed, The Wolfgang Press, Throbbing Gristle, 2nd Communication (japan), The Church, Cabaret Voltaire, Bauhaus, The Cramps, A.R. Kane, Circle Jerks, D.O.A., Broken Toys and more. Plus a priceless PSA warning against the dangers of STDs.
