Piero Umiliani - Requiem Per Un Agente Segreto OST

Piero Umiliani - Requiem Per Un Agente Segreto OST
Label - GDM
Released - 1967
Style - Jazz, Lounge, Spy, Easy Listening, Soundtrack

(From Score Baby):
He's always ready to "kiss" and to "bang". That's what the liner notes tell us of the seasoned secret agent played by Hollywood legend Stewart Granger in Requiem per un Agente Segreto -- one of the actor's many European spy flicks of the late 60s.

Umiliani's score is jazzy, and features multiple guitars, keyboards, voice, bass, drums, brass, woodwinds, strings. The music is by turns spare and atmospheric, other times propulsive and full bodied, but never bloated.

Requiem... may sometimes seem like Umiliani's Bond soundtrack, but it's stylistically closer to a Jerry Cotton score. It's more Peter Thomas, than it is John Barry. Barry's spy music is more orchestal, almost mythic in tone. Thomas's spy jazz doesn't take itself so seriously.

Although Umiliani's arrangements are fairly straight forward in comparison to Thomas' often wildly adventurous instrumentation, his light touch and beat music sensibilities make for refreshing arrangements and effective variations on the catchy Barry-esque main theme "Don't Ever Let Me Go."There are certainly stunning atmospheric passages. But there are plenty of upbeat Latinesque dance numbers to liven things up.

This GDM release features the remaster original soundtrack, plus an alternate version of the title track heard above.

Piero Umiliani - To-day's Sound

Piero Umiliani - To-day's Sound
Label - Easy Tempo
Released - 1997
Style - Funk, Soul, Jazz, Latin, Samba, Lounge, Easy Listening, Music Library, Lee Library

Notes (from Movie Grooves)
A welcome repressing of another of Piero Umiliani's fantastic library records from the early 70s when he established his own publishing company and studios (also see The Man and the City).

The original LP, only pressed in 300 copies exchanges hands for about $500 or more. Some of the tracks on To-Day's Sound were used in movies; apparently the track "Open Space" is used at the start of Baba Yaga (1973).

(from Dusty Groove)
More fantastic wild stuff by this Italian genius! This CD is filled with cool groovy little cuts featuring the maestro himself on moog, Fender Rhodes, and marimba -- plus instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, and Lowry and Hammond organs. Even more wild than the classic Sweden Heaven & Hell LP, with cool little cuts like "Safari Club", "Free Dimension", "Truck Driver", and "Music on the Road". Wonderful stuff from 1971 -- and another reason why the forces of time and space are converging on the late 90's to make this the best time ever to sample groovy music from around the globe!

Demand determines offer ...and there have been many demands! After releasing the first Popshopping Compilation one of the most frequent questions was "...and when will part 2 come?"

Therefore Senor 45 and Sir d'Oeuvre went again to the dusty tape and flexidisc archives of well-known German jazz composers, flexi-collectors and ad specialists. They fetched back 26 further powerful advertising hits, from cocoa cha cha, over cigarillo swing to the shoe shoe twist. Pop and Beat songs in the manner of economic miracle heydays. Album comes again with extensive linernotes, fullcolor booklet and all the orginal cover art.

The guys at Crippled Dick have done it again with this one! A great collection of 'lost' tracks from the archives of 60's & 70's library music publishers (De Wolfe, KPM, Selected Sound, KTS-Produktion Musik Verlag). Track one sampled by The Smut Peddlers. All killer grooves!

(from Dusty Groove)
Excellent lost funky work from Italy! The Barigozzi Group were one of these obscure little combos that churned out tight funky tracks for bigger outfits -- very much in the style of I Gres, Marc 4, or some of the other great Italian groups that are being discovered lately. Their strength was a great keyboard sound, augmented by some wonderfully produced guitars, nicely flanged or wah-wahed, and some excellent drums, played in a nice tight stiffly rhythmic style. This package includes a whopping 21 cuts pulled from 3 lost alubms -- all wrapped up in a wonderful looking cover that's one of the nicest Easy Tempo have dropped on us to date! Titles include "Tarzan Dance", "Blue Hairs", "Silver Legs", "Ivory Breast", "Black Heart", "Theme For Aretha", "Hong Kong Wind", and "Message From the Jungle". Great stuff!

(from Score Baby)
Although the music collected on The Optical Sound isn't soundtrack music per se, it clearly falls into the related camp of Sound Library.

Fans of the Easy Tempo series will recognize three of the 21 tracks here from Vol. 2: Psycho Beat. All three came from one of the original records collected on this Barigozzi Group collection. The tracks "Silver Legs" "Red Face" and "Violet Lips" come from Woman's Colours, which was originally released on Minstrel. The other records collected here are Rock in the Air and The Tropicals, both of which were released on Jump. Though the original release dates aren't noted, all could be dated in that critical period of the late 60s, early 70s.

Most of the tracks adhere to a no nonsense groovy loungecore sensibility. The group's sound boasts soulful organ and piano, tight brass, raspy flute, rolling electric bass lines and crisp funky drumming. And the stuff from The Tropicals has an exotica feel in the arrangements.

Alberto Baldan Bembo - The Smart Set
Label - Right Tempo/Easy Tempo
Released - 1998
Style - Funk, Jazz, Lounge, Easy Listening, Soundtrack, Tropical, Music Library, Lee Library

From Dusty Groove:
A beautiful bit of 70's grooviness from one of our favorite Italian composers! This set brings together 2 extremely rare soundtracks by the great Alberto Baldan Bembo, and they're both a fantastic mix of Fender Rhodes piano, vibes, wah wah guitar, and stunningly sensuous orchestrations. All of the tracks are more lively than the ones on the other Bembo reissue we've stocked, but they're no less captivating, and have the kind of haunting quality that makes the best of these Italian 70's sessions so great. Titles include Tropical Club", "Samoa", "Trop's", "Tema Di Nadia", "Carmen Blues", "Gonzales Go", "Abat Jour", and "Tema Di Barbara". Piero Piccioni - Colpo Rovente (The Original Complete Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Label - Easy Tempo
Released - 1970
Style - Electronic, Psychedelic, Jazz, Abstract, Easy Listening, Soundtrack, Library

(from Dusty Groove)
One of the best Italian scores we've heard in ages! The soundtrack is one of the best-ever by the great Piero Piccioni -- and it's a swirling mix of organ riffs, soulful tenor, and throbbing basslines. Some tracks burst out with a heavy groovy sound, while others hang back in a pensive jazzy kind of way. As with the other Easy Tempo reissues, this one's got some incredible extra material -- for a total of 27 great tracks that we've already played again and again and again. Titles include "Kintabu", "Blackflower", "Colpo Rovente", "Easy Dreamer", "Chinatown Drugs", and "LSD".

Piero Umiliani - Il Corpo [Original Soundtrack]

Piero Umiliani - Il Corpo [Original Soundtrack]
Label - Easy Tempo
Released - 1974
Style - Electronic, Jazz, Fusion, Ambient, Easy Listening, Library, Soundtrack

(from Dusty Groove)
Sweetly funky and very slinky -- this is one of the best early 70s scores by the great Italian composer Piero Umiliani! The record has lots of bubbling electric piano, rumbling electric basslines, warm acoustic percussion, and moody wordless vocals. At some level, the album sounds a lot like the contemporaneous work by the great Italian Fender Rhodes combo Crossfire -- but it's also filled with a spacey madness that could only come from the pen of Umiliani! One of the best of the recent Easy Tempo reissues -- and very nicely put together, with a consistent sound throughout!

Piero Umiliani - La Ragazza Fuori Strada

Piero Umiliani - La Ragazza Fuori Strada
Label - Easy Tempo
Released - 1975
Style - Funk, Jazz, Easy Listening, Soundtrack, Library, OST

(from scorebaby)
The '75 release La Ragazza Fuori Strada (or "The Girl from the Street") starred Zeudi Araya, who also starred in Il Corpo and La Ragazza Dalla Pelle Di Luna for which Umiliani also contributed scores reissued by Easy Tempo. Zeudi is an exotic goddess to be sure, but what of the score? As expected, Umiliani's music is a thing of groovy beauty. He often uses an orchestra augmented by a crack rhythm section, but just as often goes solo on the organ or piano, or sticks with a small combo.

Check out the crisp cymbal work, bubbling bass line and jazzy brass on "Nostalgia" -- all backed by organ and strings. Or how about that bouncing funkadelic of "Senza Tregua" with its stabbing organ lines and jangly rhythm guitar. There are 24 tracks in total, with some repetition of theme.

(from musicfromthemovies)
Fuori Strada already bears a strong influence from Isaac Hayes' 1971 breakthrough score for Shaft, evidenced in Umiliani's flawless fusion of a sizable string section, strong melodic lines, and several rhythmically charged synth tracks. It's all vintage 1970s groove music, something fans of the genre will love in Easy Tempo's expanded reissue of the original soundtrack album.

Sound Book - Library & Background Sound [de Wolfe]

Sound Book - Library & Background Sound [De Wolfe Music Library]
Discs 1 & 2
Label - Irma / La Douce
Recorded - 60s/70s
Style - Lounge, Jazz, Funk, Easy Listening, Music Library, Lee Library, OST

(from scorebaby):
This double disc collects the jazz funk of Euro-club cult fave De Wolfe, whose contribution to the soundtrack sub-genre of "library music" is of unusually high quality. The tracks are sophisticated. The performances are slick. At times, one gets the impression that the musicians who play on these sessions would have satisfied the most demanding band leaders. Sometimes the sound borders on progressive fusion, other times disco funk, and other times it almost sounds like Steely Dan, minus the singing, of course. Knowing its audience, Irma La Douche has provided brief descriptions for each of the 32 tracks. "New Project" is described as "beaty, important". "Harlem Globetrotters" is simply "medium tempo, percussion prominent". Although few of the tracks evoke anything particularily cinematic, all of it is way groovy.

Peter Thomas - Moonflowers & Mini-Skirts

Peter Thomas - Moonflowers & Mini-Skirts
Label - Marina (Germany)
Released - Late 60s/Early 70s/1998
Style - Jazz/Lounge/Rock/Funk/Easy Listening/OST/Library

(from Dusty Groove)
Wonderful stuff! As you've probably noticed in our soundtrack section, we loooove Peter Thomas, the groovy German composer/bandleader who gave the world the cool soundtracks to Space Patrol (Raumpatrouille) and the Jerry Cotton films. Now the same folks who put together the cool Motor Music compilations have done this one of Thomas' other work from the late 60s and early 70s, and it's a real doozy! The sound's a mix of space age crime, groovy bossa tunes, cool now sound gems, and wild soundtrack-y material. Titles include "Uhr 20", "Opium", "Multi-Kolored Mini-Skirts", "Rockin' Computer", "Milky Way", "Meeting Polermo", "Flash Point", "Moonflower Q 70" and "Black Power", which has vocals by a very young Donna Summer! The sound is amazing, and the CD's a real treat to any fan of groovy Euro stuff from the late 60s! New version -- with better packaging, and 2 bonus cuts: "Punjab Poppy Juice (Maxwell Implosion rmx)" and "Bonus Beats".
