Marcos Valle - The Essential Marcos Valle [Vol 1]

Marcos Valle - The Essential Marcos Valle [Vol 1]
Label - Mr. Bongo
Recorded - 1995
Style - Brazilian, Samba, Lee Library, Bossa, Jazz, Funk

(From liner notes)
Marcos Valle is a composer, arranger and singer from Rio, Brasil. This compilation covers his Samba 68 work, right up to his early 80s material. He was responsible for popularising bossa in the US, and struck gold with the "Samba 68" LP, from which the anthemic "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" (Jazz Juice 2) was taken. In the 60s bossa nova was isolated by the intellectualism of cariocas like Edu Lobo appealing to the middle class. Valle brought bossa to the masses, with protest songs talking about democracy "Democustico" and poverty in the language of the North.

His wife Anamaria features on "Ele E Ela" and "Proton Electron Neutron". Inspired by his love Marcus wrote these duets where they try to outdo each other in vocal refrains. "Os Grilos" and "Mentira" will appeal to dancers. Valle the improviser created "Nao Tem Nada Nao" and "Vem", which resonate with modal magic. His brother Paulo co-wrote most of this collection; as an airline pilot, he is responsible for the sound effects on "Freio Aerodinamico". This album is a tribute to the fertile Marcos Valle, a man and his music.

(from Dusty Groove)
An amazing compilation of the genius work of Brazilian composer/arranger/singer Marcos Valle! Valle originally started out by writing some of the biggest hits of the bossa era, but as time and the sixties wore on, he got waaaaay out in his approach to the music, and really began experimenting with a lot of crazy funky and electronic sounds, in this mad baroque way that we'd rank up there with the best groundbreaking work in MPB. Most of his best material's been out of print for years, and this extremely well-selected set gives you a rare chance to hear some of his greatest moments. This record is totally great, and will leave your jaw dropping in awe at such cuts as "Freio Aerodinamico", "Proton Electron Neutron","Mentira", "Nao Tem Nada Nao", "Democustico", and "Terra De Ninguem".

Marcos Valle - The Essential Marcos Valle [Vol 2]

Marcos Valle - The Essential Marcos Valle [Vol 2]
Label - Mr. Bongo
Released - 1996
Style - Brazilian, Lee Library, Instrumentals, Latin, Samba, Bossa, Jazz, Funk

(from liner notes)
The second collection of essential recordings of Brasilian superstar, Marcos Valle. Compiled by Joe Davis & Kevin Beedle. It chronicles the choice instrumentals and song-based sambas which earned Valle a reputation as the leading light of 60s samba.

(review from Dusty Groove)
Amazing! One of our favorite records of all time! We totally love the work of Marcos Valle -- and we can honestly say that he's probably our favorite Brazilian artist ever. Valle had an incredible musical vision, and he was one of those rare Brazilian talents -- like Edu Lobo or Egberto Gismonti -- who would forever change the face of music with his unique concepts. This set includes some of Valle's best-ever work -- much of it long out of print and never properly reissued before. The groove begins with bossa nova, moves into baroque pop, jazzy funk, and incredibly complex MPB. Titles include "Tanto Andei", "Wanda Vidal", "Batucada Sergiu", "Azimuth", "Deus Brasileiro", "A Morte De Um Deus De Sal", "Garra", "Previsao Do Tempo", and "Taio Branco Forte".

Tracklist:
1. Marcos Valle - Os Grilos (2:23)
2. Marcos Valle - Tiao Branco Forte (2:33)
3. Marcos Valle - Previsao Do Tempo (3:35)

(from AMG)
When looking for a collection of authentic Brazilian music, it is difficult not to end up buying an album of '60s exotica claiming to be pure Brazilian, or a new age guide to samba that sounds as authentic as "Blame It on the Bossa Nova." Soul Jazz remedies this problem by collecting acoustic tracks on Batucada Capoeira that sound like they were recorded in the center of the carnival. The intensity of live drumming and layered percussion are captured on the early recordings that span from 1969 to 1978. Nothing is diminished by the age of the recordings. The age of the recordings make them easy to compare to musical styles that came much later. Samba is essential dance music and foreshadows house music and other kinds of techno. The same breaks in drumming and build-ups that are used in samba are used in modern dance music to facilitate the dancers. Through the comparison of these early Brazilian dance tracks, it makes apparent the influence of dancers on the music. What truly separates Batucada Capoeira from modern dance music is that it is acoustic and the fact that it sounds so spontaneous. All of the tracks sound more like they occurred rather than were arranged. This adds to the album's feeling of authenticity. All tracks use traditional Brazilian folk instruments and manage to make music that outplays any programmed and supposedly crafted percussion-based music. Numerous comparisons of each track with its electronic counterpart could be made, but somehow it would seem to take away from the purity of these recordings. Of all the recordings on the excellent Batucada Capoeira collection, Mestre Suassuna e Dirceu's "A Morte do Capoeira" is paramount and deserves even wider recognition than this collection can offer. Soul Jazz has created a collection of recordings that does justice to a style of music that is so often ill-represented in an album format.

(From Dusty Groove)
An upbeat groover from 60s Brazil -- a highly percussive album that features work by Wilson Das Neves and Rubens Bassini! The record is an unusual one, in that it mixes the bossa harmony sound of groups like Tamba Trio or Os Cariocas with a harder, more percussive sound that owes something to the samba-grooving records of the time. The result is a really great set -- one that bristles with electricity on every groove. Titles include "Lagrima Flor", "Telefone", "Da Bola", "Deixa Isso Pra La", "Isto E Samba", "Consolacao", "Roda De Samba", and "Bate A Palma".

Excellent work from this fab Brazilian organ player! Next to Walter Wanderley, Ed Lincoln was one of Brazil's greatest talents on the Hammond Organ during the 1960s -- and this sparkling LP of samba and bossa groovers is one of his best recordings ever! The album's got a lively jazzy groove all the way through -- featuring Ed on arrangements and organ, heading up a group that includes Durval Ferreira on guitar, Alex Papa on drums, and Orlandivo on percussion. Tunes have a choppy party kind of groove -- and titles include "Sack O Woe", "E Demais", "Zum Zum Zum", "Waldemar", "O Choro Do Bebe", "Cumba Ie", and "Bala Bala Cue".

V/A - Gilles Peterson in Brazil

V/A - Gilles Peterson in Brazil
Label - Ether (UK)
Release - 2004
Style - Brazil, Bossa Nova, Samba, Electronic, Drum and Bass, Lee Library

(from Dusty Groove):
A soaring selection of Brazilian groove -- selected by the great Gilles Peterson -- one of the best collections ever assembled by the world famous DJ! Gilles goes way past the obvious for the sets, which are divided into two discs -- one for classic tracks (many of which are actually woefully under-appreciated, in the grand scheme) and a second disc of recent tracks and remixes. The mood is really soaring and soulful throughout -- groovy sambas mingle with Brazilian jazz and soul tunes, and cheeky psychedelia-steeped 60s sunshine on the first disc. The mood on disc two is wholly reverent of the samba roots, but it's also awash in modern club grooves -- with sputtering post drum & bass, a hip hop beat track sensibility on others, and a straight driving club groove on still others!

Piero Umiliani - To-day's Sound

Piero Umiliani - To-day's Sound
Label - Easy Tempo
Released - 1997
Style - Funk, Soul, Jazz, Latin, Samba, Lounge, Easy Listening, Music Library, Lee Library

Notes (from Movie Grooves)
A welcome repressing of another of Piero Umiliani's fantastic library records from the early 70s when he established his own publishing company and studios (also see The Man and the City).

The original LP, only pressed in 300 copies exchanges hands for about $500 or more. Some of the tracks on To-Day's Sound were used in movies; apparently the track "Open Space" is used at the start of Baba Yaga (1973).

(from Dusty Groove)
More fantastic wild stuff by this Italian genius! This CD is filled with cool groovy little cuts featuring the maestro himself on moog, Fender Rhodes, and marimba -- plus instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, and Lowry and Hammond organs. Even more wild than the classic Sweden Heaven & Hell LP, with cool little cuts like "Safari Club", "Free Dimension", "Truck Driver", and "Music on the Road". Wonderful stuff from 1971 -- and another reason why the forces of time and space are converging on the late 90's to make this the best time ever to sample groovy music from around the globe!
