Marcos Valle - The Essential Marcos Valle [Vol 2]

Marcos Valle - The Essential Marcos Valle [Vol 2]
Label - Mr. Bongo
Released - 1996
Style - Brazilian, Lee Library, Instrumentals, Latin, Samba, Bossa, Jazz, Funk

(from liner notes)
The second collection of essential recordings of Brasilian superstar, Marcos Valle. Compiled by Joe Davis & Kevin Beedle. It chronicles the choice instrumentals and song-based sambas which earned Valle a reputation as the leading light of 60s samba.

(review from Dusty Groove)
Amazing! One of our favorite records of all time! We totally love the work of Marcos Valle -- and we can honestly say that he's probably our favorite Brazilian artist ever. Valle had an incredible musical vision, and he was one of those rare Brazilian talents -- like Edu Lobo or Egberto Gismonti -- who would forever change the face of music with his unique concepts. This set includes some of Valle's best-ever work -- much of it long out of print and never properly reissued before. The groove begins with bossa nova, moves into baroque pop, jazzy funk, and incredibly complex MPB. Titles include "Tanto Andei", "Wanda Vidal", "Batucada Sergiu", "Azimuth", "Deus Brasileiro", "A Morte De Um Deus De Sal", "Garra", "Previsao Do Tempo", and "Taio Branco Forte".

Tracklist:
1. Marcos Valle - Os Grilos (2:23)
2. Marcos Valle - Tiao Branco Forte (2:33)
3. Marcos Valle - Previsao Do Tempo (3:35)
4. Marcos Valle - Mentira Carioca (2:04)
5. Marcos Valle - Tanto Andei (1:44)
6. Marcos Valle - Seu Encanto (2:28)
7. Marcos Valle - Gente (2:23)
8. Marcos Valle - Com Mais De 30 (2:44)

On 'The Swinger From Rio' (from http://www.317x.com/albums/m/sergiomendes/card.html):
We have become more familiar with the music of Latin America and especially that
of Brazil in the past year. The new music from Brazil (better known as bossa nova)
has been absorbed into the mainstream of our own music. This is completely natural.
While we have been listening to their music, Latin American musicians have been
listening to ours. Jazz music in particular has been fascinating to them for quite some
time, and it would be accurate to describe bossa nova as a marriage of modern
Brazilian music and American jazz. The music contained in this album is the happy
result of a meeting of Brazilian bossa nova stars and American jazz musicians.

Sergio Mendes, the young man who graces the cover of this LP is one of the
brightest talents to emerge from Brazilian music circles. He possesses a crisp piano
style that clearly dominates all of the performances in this album. The clarity of
Sergio's musical thought is always apparent whether he is soloing, playing ensemble
or accompanying someone else's solo. In addition he inspires some of the finest work
on records by the well known jazz performers, Art Farmer, Phil Woods and Hubert
Laws.

Sergio is accustomed to playing with a country's leading musicians. He became a
professional pianist at the age of sixteen. One year later he organized his own group
to perform at parties and in night clubs in and around his hometown of Niteroi which is
across the bay from the more celebrated Brazilian town of Ipanema. The composer
and musician, Antonio Carlos Jobim, heard Sergio play and was very impressed. He
gave him a great nea'fof encouragement, arid before long Sergio joined the circle of
musicians in Rio who were creating a new musical style that came to be known as
bossa nova.

It is impossible to conceive of greater musical understanding than that which is shown
by Sergio, fluegelhornist Art Farmer, saxophonist Phil Woods and flutist Hubert Laws
in this album. Listening to the way their solos dovetail one could easily assume these
musicians have worked together for many years. Sergio has the remarkable facility of
matching the tonal quality of his instrument to that of the musician with whom he is
playing. Notice for instance that when he and Art Farmer exchange phrases at the end
of Useless Panorama, the sound of their instruments maintain an even flow. On So
Danco Samba and Maria Moita there is a little more bite to Sergio's piano work to match
the drive of Phil Woods' robust saxophone style. Though these musicians may have
been born thousands of miles apart, they are truly kindred spirits.

Sergio's good friend and the man he calls his mentor. Antonio Carlos Jobim, is on hand
for many of the numbers. Better known as the composer of the classic bossa nova
tunes (Desafinado, One Note Samba, etc.), Jobim is also an accomplished guitarist.
Hear how he introduced his composition, Useless Panorama by softly phrasing the
melody. The musicians who make up the rhythm section are members of Sergio's own
trio, Tiao Netto on bass and drummer Chico DeSouza. They keep the front line swinging
in all tempos.

Geographically Sergio Mendes may be The Swinger From Rio—on the basis of his
playing in this album he could also be The Swinger From The USA.

Random Amazon reviews:

5.0 out of 5 stars
Some of Sergio's best jazz efforts, June 18, 2000
By Barbara J. Major "bjbear71" (Upper Darby, PA United States)

This compilation set features the talents of Sergio's Bossa Rio Sextet recorded in Brazil. To borrow a phrase from a Brazilian journalist I highly respect, this group "is tight and swinging" from the first opening bars to the last.

Unfortunately, this group only recorded a few albums in Brazil ("The Beat of Brazil" LP actually is a U.S. reissue of the Philips Brasil "Sergio Mendes and Bossa Rio" LP). We deserved to hear more from these great jazzmen, all of them.

Antonio Carlos Jobim himself did the arrangement for "Ele e Carioca" on the "Beat of Brazil" LP!

If you are a jazz fan and want to hear good solid arrangements and first class jazz piano playing by Sergio, be sure to pick up this compilation, it will not disappoint.

Jazz Bossa Nova x Non-Jazz Bossa Nova, June 30, 2000
By Carlos from Rio "Carlos from Rio" (Rio de Janeiro, RJ Brazil) - See all my reviews

Sergio Mendes is one of those rare Brazilian artists who plays very well on both shores. This CD contains 2 albums from his Brazilian output. You should know that the album here contained "The Beat of Brazil" was originally entiled "Você Ainda Não Ouviu Nada". Furthermore, you should know this is considered the best of all Mendes' output by Brazilian serious reviewers and musicians. Here @ Amazon, you'll also find Sergio Mendes samba (not jazzy) from his Brazil'66 efforts and I would not keep myself on a radical point-of-view of discarding them: it is very good samba too, though not jazzy. If I had to choose, I'd pick'em all. This CD is essential to serious Bossa Nova collectors. All stars.

(from Dusty Groove)
Billed in the press as "the original bass and drum", this is a wonderful set of rare Batucada percussion tracks, lovingly packaged by Mr Bongo for the hipster London scene. In case you're not familiar with Batucada, it's got that hard, fast percussion sound, with lots of instruments in unison, that you hear on samba records, or other older Brazilian percussion sides. This volume's one of the best ways you could ever get into the music -- and there's an excellent sampling of tunes by a wide number of artists. Titles include "Ritmo Number One" by Paulinho Da Costa, "Pai Bene, Queimou O Pe" by Pontela, "Rapido" by Portinho, "Repimar" by Jadir De Castro and Dom Um Romao, "Vibrando Com A Selecao" by Verde Amarelo, and "Quando O Couro Fala" by Fernando.

(from MrBongo.com)
The drums of the samba, the sound of Rio at 180bpm. The secret weapon of all DJs be they house, techno, jazz or latin orientated. This is the music that provides pulsating cannon that goes off in the house clubs. The most exciting dance rhythm in the world.

This album contains all the essential classics brought together under one roof. From the No 1 much sampled mega-anthem Batucada by maestro Par Ney De Castro, to the in-demand mid tempo burner Batumata with the legendary bongo solo leading to the crash as the Batucada beat kicks in.

Most of the more obscure tracks have been culled from the OLD SKOOL OF BATUCADA: the legendary Fantastic Bateria series on Top Tape. With the main man Padre Miguel leading the way this is bread & butter Batucada. The samba rhythm gets speeded up by each batucada troop matching the pace of the street. The favela is humming as the tempo builds. No one beats a drum as rapido as the boys from Rio.

We must thank Raphael from Tokyo's UFO for unearthing the gem Reprimar Jadir clashes heads uptown with Dom Um in this furious guica led showdown. No club has ever rocked as large as when the mighty Sebag dropped this science.

Legendary percussionist Paulinho De Costa opens up with a one man percussion shakedown. He burned with the eternal flame of BATA. Like a man possessed he furiously creates wave after wave of hardcore triangle, tamborim, bata and cuica solos.

Who can forget the first time they heard Nicos Jarit's deeply dubby bass sound blowing the windows out of every club from the Sub to the ministry.

Thanks to the rough neck jazz Dancers and those who can stay with the rhythm as we cross from the lay down tempo Drum & Bass to the hardcore Bateria.

* Lee Library stumped me on this one. Can't find a damned thing about this online anywhere! It's very much a Japanese import, and that probably explains why.

(From groovecollector.com)
Rare.

Machito's contribution to the development of Afro-Cuban Jazz can not be overstated. His band, the Afro-Cuban Salseros, were the first to fuse jazz with Afro-Cuban rhythm. The band's arrangements broke new ground with their use of contrasting rhythmic figures and dynamic contrast. Musical director, lead trumpeter and cousin Mario Bauza used the band's three trumpets to achieve piercing climaxes, while the saxophone section offered lush harmonies and counterpoint. Cutting-edge solo improvisations grounded themselves in the Bop innovations of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, both of whom served stints in the band themselves. The band maintained a rock-solid foundation in the traditional Cuban rhythmic pattern known as the "clave." Machito stood at the head of this musical juggernaut, leading the band with his maracas and rich, vibrato-laden baritone. This musical hybrid gave rise to a dance craze which was to last over a decade. Critics and fans labeled the sound "Mambo," which, in the Yoruba language, means "important matter." An important matter, indeed.

Fantastic! This is one of the all-time Brazilian jazz classics of the 60's -- and one of the most sought after bossa albums ever! Pianist Tenorio Jr leads a crack ensemble through some fantastic tracks -- as warm and soulful as they are tight and angular, a perfect summation of the bossa jazz idiom at its truest expression! The writing is fantastic throughout -- and the album includes loads of great numbers -- including the famous "Nebulosa", instantly recognizable from a sample used by United Future Organization, and the tracks "Clouds", "Nectar", "Embalo", and "Estou Nessa Agora".

Lalo Schifrin/Al Hirt - Latin in the Horn

Lalo Schifrin/Al Hirt - Latin in the Horn
Recorded - 1966
Label - RCA/Victor
Style - Latin, Jazz, Soundtrack, Smooth

(from somewhere else):
By Al "He's The King" Hirt -- Arranged and Conducted by Lalo Schifrin.
A lush, easy-going Brazilian outing, Latin in the Horn is aided substantially by the sophistication Lalo Schifrin brings to Hirt's cotton candy. Schifrin's orchestra waxes elegantly while Hirt's restraint is a pleasant surprise. Even though this outing post-dates the "Bossa Nova" fad by a few years, Schifrin was always masterful in this style (to date, his last journey in this direction except for his disco retakes on this LP's first three tracks on 1976's BLACK WIDOW). Listeners will certainly want to hear the magic Schifrin weaves on beauties like "Taboo," "Angelitos Negros," "Margarita," "Be True To Me" and the two Schifrin originals ("A Sky Without Stars" and "Gringo A Go Go"). Much better than most would think.

From the album cover - "Al Hirt...is heard here in still another context. The album authentically represents this exciting idiom...Here, in fact, is a dramatically different Hirt. His famous flair and exuberance are much in evidence, to be sure, in his soaring solo flights and biting attack. But one hears an emotional intensity in these performances--a certain introspective quality--that adds a stimulating new dimension to Al's playing...

In this album, Lalo Schifrin has showcased Al's horn against a varicolored backdrop of strings and rhythm patterns that catch both the soul and the spirit of the new Latin-American sound. Schifrin...has spiced his scores with the true Latin flavor of his native South America, leavened with a jazz feeling...

Al Hirt's astonishing versatility will find new cause for wonder in this album of Latin-American music. And the millions of fans who now consider him 'the King' can henceforth regard him as 'El Rey.'"

His name is Gerhard Nieckau, nickname Jeff. In the early 60s he went to Africa, later to Peru and Trinidad to explore unknown musical territory , to record music and to fit studios. His trademark is a simple recording technique without frills, resulting in a pure, almost raw sound. All compiled pearls were found in his private archive, most of them published for the first time in Europe. The wide range reaches from Calypso to Funk, from Jazz to Roots Beats. Antonio Carlos Jobim - Tide
Label - A&M/CTI (Japan)
Released - 1970
Style - Jazz, Bossa Nova, Latin, Brazil, Lee Library

(from Dusty Groove):
An incredible record -- from the first off-key note to the last! The album's filled with some wonderfully moody LA studio sounds, arranged by Deodato, and a has a great swirling mix of sound that weaves around Jobim's lofty guitar and piano. From the first note, you can feel the strange magic of Jobim and Deodato at work -- as the album appears to be smooth and mellow, yet has a strangely unsettling undertone that keeps us coming back after all these years! Tracks include "Tema Jazz", "Carinhoso", "Rockanalia", and a nice remake of "Girl From Ipanema". Plus, the CD features 4 bonus alternate versions, including an 8 minute take of "Tema Jazz"!

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Stone Flower

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Stone Flower
Label - A&M/CTI (Japan)
Released - 1970
Style - Jazz, Bossa Nova, Latin, Brazil, Lee Library

(from Dusty Groove):
One of Antonio Carlos Jobim's greatest records -- and a perfect blend of his subtle bossa genius with the moody electric sound of CTI! Jobim plays electric and acoustic piano, guitar, and sings a bit -- and Deodato handled the arrangements with a breezy brilliance that matches all the magic of Jobim's wonderful compositions, but gives them a slightly more fluid feel too -- in a way that's somewhat more sophisticated than the sound of Jobim's previous CTI outings -- Tide and Wave. Other players on the album include Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, and Airto on percussion -- and there's a great mix of Brazilian and American styles on the set -- electric, sinister, breezy, and always wonderful! Includes the titles "Sabia", "God & The Devil In The Land Of The Sun", "Children's Games", "Stone Flower", "Brazil", "Tereza My Love", and "Choro".

Piero Umiliani - To-day's Sound

Piero Umiliani - To-day's Sound
Label - Easy Tempo
Released - 1997
Style - Funk, Soul, Jazz, Latin, Samba, Lounge, Easy Listening, Music Library, Lee Library

Notes (from Movie Grooves)
A welcome repressing of another of Piero Umiliani's fantastic library records from the early 70s when he established his own publishing company and studios (also see The Man and the City).

The original LP, only pressed in 300 copies exchanges hands for about $500 or more. Some of the tracks on To-Day's Sound were used in movies; apparently the track "Open Space" is used at the start of Baba Yaga (1973).

(from Dusty Groove)
More fantastic wild stuff by this Italian genius! This CD is filled with cool groovy little cuts featuring the maestro himself on moog, Fender Rhodes, and marimba -- plus instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, and Lowry and Hammond organs. Even more wild than the classic Sweden Heaven & Hell LP, with cool little cuts like "Safari Club", "Free Dimension", "Truck Driver", and "Music on the Road". Wonderful stuff from 1971 -- and another reason why the forces of time and space are converging on the late 90's to make this the best time ever to sample groovy music from around the globe!

Demand determines offer ...and there have been many demands! After releasing the first Popshopping Compilation one of the most frequent questions was "...and when will part 2 come?"

Therefore Senor 45 and Sir d'Oeuvre went again to the dusty tape and flexidisc archives of well-known German jazz composers, flexi-collectors and ad specialists. They fetched back 26 further powerful advertising hits, from cocoa cha cha, over cigarillo swing to the shoe shoe twist. Pop and Beat songs in the manner of economic miracle heydays. Album comes again with extensive linernotes, fullcolor booklet and all the orginal cover art.

Featuring the famous German composers: Martin Böttcher, Charles Nowa, Wolfgang Dauner, Peter Thomas, Peter Schirmann, Johnny Teupen and others!!!

Janko Nilovic - Impressions Vol. 1

Janko Nilovic - Impressions Vol. 1
Label - Dare-Dare/Pulp Flavor
Recorded - 60s/70s
Style - Soul, Pop, Jazz, Afro, Latin, Library, OST

(from moviegrooves)
Impressions: Volume 1 is a fantastic selection of multi-instrumentalist Janko Nilovic's output for the Montparnasse 2000, Télémusic and Selection music libraries during the 60s and 70s which first appeared on LPs such as Psy Impressions, Pop Impressions, Soul Impressions and Vocal Impressions - all now very much in demand by collectors and library music lovers!

Born on May 20th, 1941, in Montenegro, Janko Nilovic began his formal musical training at the age of five. Although an heir to the Slavic and Balkan tradition, he never set aside the more modern styles of jazz, soul and pop, an open-mindedness which also led him to try his luck in Paris in 1960 (where he still lives). Working ten hours a day with a never-faltering persistance, Janko swiftly joined the professional circles, adding up sessions, joys and disappointments.

Nilovic produced more than thirty albums for record companies that specialised in Library Music.

Both Impressions Volume 1 and Volume 2 prove how broad Janko's field of activity can be, how developed was his capacity to digest and to merge his multiple influences and create this timeless language.
