V/A - Rise/Converge

V/A - Rise/Converge
Label - Collision Substance
Released - 2000
Style - Electronic/Experimental/Ambient/Downtempo/Noise

Notes: Compiled/Sequenced by the good buddy Kurt Gluck of Ohm Resistance.

(from Brainwashed)
Kurt Gluck explains in the rather impressive booklet for this CD that he wanted to arrange a collection of various artists that could be listened to together in one listen. It makes sense reading this after the first listen through, as it was difficult to pick out which track was which artist, or even where the track ends and the new one begins. The package is wire bound and has stiff die-cut pieces of cardboard, black pages with amber printing. The artists featured include Scorn, Tactile, Aube, Nigel Ayers, and many others. The music is dark and rich, full of dub influenced rhythms and noise influenced frequencies. The disc can serve both as backround music or for deep listening purposes, and should definitely be played in the dark.

Tracklisting:
01 Hayleck - PM (Havana 1961) (6:19)
02 SU8M3RG3D - Exothermic Sculptures (5:50)
03 OCOSI - Xes (3:43)

jhno - Membrane

jhno - Membrane
Label - Delicate Ear
Released - 2000
Style - Electronic/Ambient/IDM

jhno, a.k.a. John Eichenseer, began releasing music in 1995 under his own label, Delicate Ear - including three full-length cd's (understand, KWNO, membrane), and a 12" single (Fly). He is also a member of SPOOL (with John Ridenour) and CRATER (with Scott Amendola, Nels Cline, and others).

Playing piano since age four, jhno has studied jazz, classical, electronic, and ethnic music. These elements are intertwined in his studio compositions, which stretch to connect drum&bass with gamelan, jazz with ambient, experimental with downtempo. His music has been praised by critics and listeners alike as a unique and mind-bifurcating synergy of technology and organic processes.

jhno is also well-known in the world of music software, primarily for his work with Cycling '74 on Max/MSP, Pluggo, and radiaL - a loop-based music application based on the tool he developed for laptop performance with the bands Wavelord and CRATER.

jhno wrote music for modern dance and experimental theater in Austin, Texas, in the early 1990's. He moved to San Francisco in 1994, and spent the next decade contributing to the local live jazz, ambient, and improv scenes - performing with many diverse musical groups, solo concerts and dj sets, and organizing all-night ambient listening events at the warehouse space where he lived, 964 Natoma. jhno is currently living a nomadic life in Europe.

Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia - Psychick Rhythms Vol. 1 EP

Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia - Psychick Rhythms Vol. 1
Label - KK Records
Released - 1993
Style - Electronic/Techno/Minimal

(from hyperreal)
The Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia are currently Reinier Brekelmans, Joris Hilckmann and Tim Freeman (who is their ever present soundman). Previously Bobby Reiner was in the band but he was not present in the most recent release, "Record of Breaks." The band is from Holland on a Belgian label, KK Records. I understand Robert Heynen left the band to form a new band called Exquisite Corpse, also on the KK label. Around 1985 the original lineup were in an industrial band called The Infants. After this they went onto form Sluagh Ghairm which means "spirits cry" and lasted for two years.

In case you're wondering about the "psychick cross" logo they use, the references to the number 23 or the way they spell things on some of the earlier releases, they are not associated with the band Psychic TV. They were however associated with the Temple Ov Psychick Youth (TOPY) as they were probably memebers of this magickal/occult secret society. If that means nothing to you, then just know that they are "sound crafters" instead of musicians for ritual purposes.

My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - Confessions Of A Knife

My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - Confessions Of A Knife
Label - Wax Trax!
Released - 1990
Style - Druggy, Industrial Dance

"I live for drugs"
"I freaked out very very badly.... Freaked out - on acid."

(from TKK's website)
TKK formed in 1987, when two Chicago club kids took the soundtrack for an art film project they were working on, and transmuted it into one of rock’s most influential alternative industrial acts. The title of the film became the name of the band, and Franke Nardiello and Marston Daley assumed the stage roles of “Groovie Mann” and “Buzz McCoy”, rounded up some of their night crawler friends to complete the cast, and hit the highway!

Playing up the B-movie theme, TKK incorporated the use of horror film imagery and bizarre vocal samples within a unique mixture of electro-glam-punk-funk-lounge music. They created an over the top stage show full of glitz, glam, tease and sleaze. A revolving cast of musicians, performance artist, fire-breathers and their own Russ Meyer-esque back-up group of voluptuous vixens, known as the BOMB GANG GIRLZ, rounded things out.

Tracklisting:
1 A Daisy Chain 4 Satan (Acid Flowers Mix) (5:29)
2 The Days Of Swine And Roses (6:01)
3 Hand In Hand (6:15)
4 Waiting For Mommie (5:23)

9 Burning Dirt (5:02)

11 Do You Fear (The Inferno Express?) (Bonus Track) (4:32)

*** Thanks to the big boss Carlos Nuñez for playing me this record back in the day! Come to think of it, Carlos deserves props for playing me alot of the Wax Trax stuff (Ministry/Coil - LSD/etc.)... as a matter of fact, props to the entire Nuñez clan for all their massive musical influence on me. Fugazi @ Ft. Reno weekend shows, the Danzig show, all the hardcore shows @ Sanctuary Theater, and tons of underground musical knowledge. Plus all the introductory heavy metal shit they schooled me on. Big big props! ok callate, esteban...

The High Llamas - Lollo Rosso [remix EP]

The High Llamas - Lollo Rosso remix EP
Label - v2
Released - 1998
Style - Electronic/Experimental/Groovy

I love this record. It's like groovy electronic lounge muzik infused with plenty of quirky analogue weirdness. Sorry to say I have yet to check out the originals, but I doubt I'd enjoy them more than these remixes.

(from channel4.com)
For this seven-track remix album, the High Llamas ignore the usual constraints of the form, bypassing mere dancefloor utility in favour of genuinely interesting sonic reinventions. The remixers - Mouse On Mars, Cornelius, Schneider TM, Jim O'Rourke, Kid Loco, Stock Hausen and Walkman, and highest Llama Sean O'Hagan-mostly keep only the barest outlines of the original tracks, refashioning each in their own styles.
Mouse On Mars' wibbly-wobbly analogue synthesizers, Cornelius' playful Brian Wilson homages, Kid Loco's slinky groove, and O'Rourke's soundscapes are probably the most successful, but there's little tedium on this 46-minute album.

Tracklisting:
1 Showstop Hic Hup (remixed by Mouse On Mars) (6:36)
2 Homespin Rerun (Cornelius Remix) (6:12)
3 Homerun Ubershow (remixed by Schneider TM) (7:37)
4 Mini-Management (remixed by Jim O'Rourke) (8:25)
