* Maniac is one of the best movies ever made. I've always caught it late late night on TV and thought how awesomely appropriate the weird analog-soaked electronic backdrop was as a soundtrack. It's a psycho movie and highly suggested to those who like to walk on the dark side!

The superb dark and brooding electronic score to the cult early 80's classic horror/gore movie from William Lustig. Starring the late Joe Spinell (RIP) and Caroline Munro, it's the story of Frank Zito - one of the creepiest mentalists you're ever likely to run into - and his obsession with his dead mother which manifests itself by his brutal killing of young women. This is a disturbing score - made all the more freaky by the use of dialogue from the movie mixed seamlessly into one of the tracks. Kind of like a really dark chill-out CD. A real collectors item - highly recommended.

In exchange for Dario Argento's help on Dawn of the Dead, George Romero allowed Argento to release a different (more explicit) cut of the movie in Europe. This version was called "Zombi". Instead of the library music score that Romero had used, Argento enlisted the help of his pals Goblin to record a new soundtrack. The result is a brilliant score; menacing, thrilling and totally suited to the movie. There's even a sleazy lounge-esque track - "Zombi (Supermarket)". We don't say it often, but this is a must!

The track Zombi is currently being used as part of the soundtrack for the (new UK zombie-comedy movie) Shaun of the Dead.

This is Riz Ortolani's excellent soundtrack to Cannibal Holocaust - Ruggero Deodato's notoriously graphic gut-munching shocker from 1980.

The Cannibal Holocaust soundtrack is a wonderfully eclectic affair which mixes a variety of styles that - if you didn't know the contents of the movie - you wouldn't guess comes from the stomach-turner that is Cannibal Holocaust.

For the Main Theme, Ortolani serves up a lovely gentle melody that, although a beautiful piece of music, is somewhat at odds with what's about to follow on-screen. And that's what makes Cannibal Holocaust soundtrack so great.

For the rest of the Cannibal Holocaust soundtrack, Ortolani uses a full arsenal of musical styles and arrangements (including electronics!) to convey a variety of emotions including sadness (Adulteress' Punishment), frivolity (Cameramen's Recreation) and introspection (Crucified Woman).

And if that wasn't enough - our boy Riz only goes and gives us a great lounge track (Relaxing in the Savana) and the fantastically jazzy "Drinking Coco" too!

Highly recommended.

Originally released by RCA in 1970, Citta Violenta became a firm favourite with Morricone collectors worldwide. The film was directed with much flair by filmmaker Sergio Sollima, who managed to bring out fine performances from Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas and Umberto Orsini. However, the movie failed to stir much interest in cinemas and soon disappeared from the screens.

This special edition contains five additional cues and better sound quality than previous issues. This is one of Morricone’s best efforts of the 1970s with every cue brimming with the sound that we now associate with Morricone and Italian cinema during this period.

The music and musical sounds perfectly capture the sounds of the urban environment, with guitars sounding rather like cats calling in the darkness in some cues.

The work contains some quiet and effective moments, as in the opening sections of ‘Momento Estremo’, but the highlights of the score are tracks such as ‘Disperatamente’ and ‘Svolta Definitiva’. The latter starts as a funky sounding up-tempo number, before changing into a fast-paced chase track with frantic bongos and eerie sounding vocalising , which includes a gasping effect from Il Cantori Moderni, enhanced by fuzzy sounding guitar stabs and a guitar rift that is repeated throughout the tracks duration. There is also a secondary theme that pops up in a couple of cues which is just as strong and appealing as Morricone’s principal theme for the movie, heard to its full potential in ‘Riassunto’, where the composer combines both the principal and secondary themes in a stunning and highly listenable composition.

I would have posted this earlier but there is NOTHING online about it, and I couldn't find the CD to scan the artwork. But I took the day off and after 5 minutes of searching I finally found it. This came straight from Lee's Library, and I think he got it at a local used CD store back in the day. From what I can gather, I think it was put together by Biochip C (man of many aliases) and others. I know the name Biochip C from working with Freddy Fresh's Analog Records back in college. He used to send us these mystery boxes of random records, some with absolutely no info on them at all. I LOVE FREDDY FRESH!!! Regardless of his ever-present mustache, the dude is a goldmine of random obscure underground hip-hop/electro knowledge and expertise. Love him. So anyways - this CD is just a weird one. Seems like a bootleg that was put out by the people who made it, and I have no idea why it's so rare and undocumented. But we have it! and now you do too....

I've been meaning to post this for a while, but I had to find it first. Now that I found it, I'm really syked to post it because it's one of those highly overlooked urban gems from the late 80s that really deserves its props. The main track I knew from the album was the title song 'Born This Way (Let's Dance)' - and I only just recently became exposed to that from watching VH1 Soul's Soul School show. If you live in the states and get the VH1 Soul channel on cable, check your listings for Soul School. They play alot of the classic hip hop/r&b videos from the 80s and early 90s. There isn't alot of that stuff that I haven't come across before, but they do surprise me from time to time. Seeing the Cookie Crew video was one of those surprises. Being natives of South London, the Cookie Crew girls were obviously in touch with house music and acid house which were big in London at the time. So you can really pick up on the 'hip-house' sound they helped pioneer; a sound that gave way in the states to entire new music genres like Baltimore Club music and Nu Jack Swing. I look at it as some sort of underground Music Pathology, and I'm always looking for connections between different forms of music or sample sources and shit. So in that respect, this Cookie Crew album is seriously interesting to me. Please believe it. And enjoy it. Word.

Cookie Crew is a rap music duo formed in Clapham, South London in 1983. Pryce and Banfield decided to break away from a 13-strong rap aggregation called "Warm Milk And The Cookie Crew" and make a career as a duo. In 1985 their career took off after winning a national rap championship and recording two sessions for the John Peel radio show. They gained a contract from the UK dance record label Rhythm King and were put in the studio with the production trio Beatmasters, who put them in a house music direction.

In July 1987, the resultant single "Rok Da House" (no relation to the dance single "Rock The House" by Scoop) was popular in the nightclubs and peaked at number 79 in UK Singles Chart. Their follow-up single "Females" also was a minor hit in October 1987. The continuing popularity of "Rok Da House" in nightclubs eventually renewed interest in the track and garnered a couple of television appearances. The record was re-issued at end of December 1987 and crossed over into the mainstream. The song became a Top 5 hit at the beginning of February 1988, and was even used for an advertising campaign. The track is often quoted as being the first hip house record.

The duo moved on to another label, FFRR Records and different producers, resulting in a string of hit singles in 1989, with "Born This Way (Let's Dance)", "Got To Keep On" with Edwin Starr and "Come And Get Some"; plus the album Born This Way! which reached a modest number 24 in the UK Albums Chart.

By 1992 there were differences of opinion with their then label London Records over musical direction, and the duo parted company to pursue separate projects.

Change up the style

Lee Library has some dark corners we haven't exposed quite yet, so now is when we flex the oldschool Jungle/Drum'n'Bass comps. We've watched the Jungle/DnB output go from original and groundbreaking in 1993/94 to completely unoriginal and boring by 2001+. There's only so far you can take this sound/tempo before you start regurgitating what's already been done, and that's clearly the state of things today. People are still into it, and they still have the little dj nights here in town that cater exclusively to Dudestep or Wobble (I prefer the term Dudestep). And there's the Liquid Funk contingent as well, catering to more of the jazzy funk-oriented Drum'n'Bass. But I much prefer the sound of pre-1996 Jungle/Drum'n'Bass. It's much more concentrated and raw, and the focus was primarily on the breaks back then. Pitch many of these tunes down 3 octaves and you have a real treat! So anyways, hope people enjoy these. It's not material you will easily find anywhere these days since the label stopped production on these compilations.

Not much to say about these Jungle Tekno comps except that they're all extremely impressive. Alot of people are familiar with Drum'n'Bass but not many know the history behind it, and many aren't familiar with the early Jungle records that paved the way for Drum'n'Bass. This Jungle Tekno series, along with other Jumpin' & Pumpin' series, does a great job of culling the really important tracks from the earlier years of Jungle/DnB. It's hard to find any documentation online which might shed some light on the history of the Jumpin' & Pumpin' label, but they've consistently released some of the best electronic dance music in my lifetime. Just browsing through their discography, you'll see the broad range they cover from oldschool UK hardcore to FSOL/ambient stuff and then a number of solid compilations.
