A little background on the Bass Architects…

Eternal and Transit are two of the most established underground djs that the DC area has produced. With over 30 years experience between them and countless performances dating back to 1994 these two know exactly what it takes to get a dancefloor rocking. They have earned a reputation for playing tight, musical sets and have an uncanny ability to select tunes most djs slept on or just plain missed out on. The two are also notorious crate diggers and their sets are sure to feature a few rarities and classics on wax.

Eternal, who got his start playing jungle and breakbeat in Richmond VA and Allentown PA back in 1995, was part of the seminal Parametrics DC DJ crew, resident DJ at the AYA DnB weekly and later as resident and head of DnB bookings for the massive Destination weekly at DC Tunnel. Steve Eternal was also the brains behind PMX Radio in the early 2000′s and is currently a resident at the legendary Eighteenth Street Lounge in DC, where he holds down Dub and Dancehall for Wednesday nights as Version Sound. Transit was one of the first jungle/dnb djs in Upstate NY while in school at Cornell and was also partners with Rogers and Freefall as part of CatalystDC. He also helped start progressive dnb label TestFlight Recordings which featured forward thinking beats from artists like Blame, ASC and Orion.

The Bass Architecture project is their most recent endeavor and aims squarely at the diverse world of Bass music. Bass Architecture Version 1 is a deep and soulful journey into the sound of UK Garage and modern Bass music unlike many you will hear. They effortlessly combine complex beat structures and atmospheric textures with post-rave vocal edits to great effect. Modern masters like Ramadanman and Pangaea feature prominently alongside new school beatsmiths like George Fitzgerald, Jack Dixon and Jay Grind. With influences ranging from freestyle and footwork to deep techno, dub and chicago house this is just a taste of what to expect in the next few years from this seasoned duo.

In addition to new and classic mixes and a podcast starting this spring they plan to put out several new original tunes later this year. Remember to check out Steve Eternal aka Version Sound every other Wednesday spinning dancehall at the venerable Eighteenth Street Lounge in DC!

* Props to Erictronica and EXBC crew for hosting and supporting Bass Arx, and for being proactive about pushing this underground music forward not just locally here in DC, but globally with the EXBC programming and online presence. Looking forward to the Future!!!

Thøse Norwegians - Kaminzky Park

Norwegian house...

Just saying 'house' doesn't even come close. Sure, it came out on a house label - but these guys completely pull off blaxploitation funk, authentic with subtle sleazy nuances that prove what talented musicians these producers are at the core. Amazing stuff... Truly timeless!

Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite albums of all time. After this record came out, they kinda disappeared into Norwegian clouds of p00f. Enchanting!

praps to quail.egg.fish for the bullet-ridden source. p00f...

also praps to Jes Rosenberg who gave me this record at WXJM to review when it first came out in '97... miss ya dude.

Let's Go, Techno!

"Origins
Originating in the United States, techno was primarily developed by "The Belleville Three", a cadre of men who were attending college, at the time, near Detroit, Michigan. The budding musicians, former high school friends and mix tape traders Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, found inspiration in Midnight Funk Association, an eclectic, 5-hour, late-night radio program hosted on various Detroit radio stations including WCHB, WGPR, and WJLB-FM from 1977 through the mid-1980s by DJ Charles "The Electrifying Mojo" Johnson. Mojo's show featured heavy doses of electronic sounds from the likes of Giorgio Moroder, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream alongside the funk of Parliament and the new wave sounds of the B-52s.
Techno has since been retroactively defined to encompass, among others, works dating back to "Shari Vari" (1981) by A Number Of Names, the earliest compositions by Cybotron (1981), Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder's "I Feel Love" (1977), "From Here to Eternity" (1977) and the more dancefloor-orientated selections from Kraftwerk's repertoire between 1977 and 1983. These electro-disco tracks share with techno a dependence on machine-generated beats and dancefloor popularity.
Techno became more of a phenomenon in Europe than in the United States; American artists such as Moby and The Crystal Method who entered the electronic music scene producing techno were initially successful in Europe, but did not gain a presence in the U.S. until branching out into other styles such as breakbeat and electronica. The popularity of the techno movement peaked in the late 90s, particularly in 1999 at the Berlin Love Parade with an attendance of over one and a half million techno enthusiasts.

Funk and soul influences
Techno draws heavily upon its funk and soul music roots to create its characteristically intense grooves and percussive basslines. Early pioneers of the genre melded the beat-centric styles of their Motown predecessors with the most modern technology of the time. Utilizing cutting-edge "beat machines" like the Roland TR-808, TR-909 and TB-303, early techno producers generated a new sound by creating intricate, unabashedly synthetic lower ranges, pushing conventional funk and soul to its limits. What resulted was a typified "Detroit techno sound" that permeates the core of vastly differing genres today.

Developments
In the late 1980s, different subgenres of techno music began to emerge, including hardcore techno, an intensified style typified by a fast tempo (around 160 bpm) and the rhythmic use of distorted and atonal industrial-like beats and samples, and ambient techno, with artists such as The Orb and Aphex Twin producing dub music and ambient influenced techno that later had an influence on artists dabbling in the minimal techno and what was originally techno's experimental offshoot, IDM. Techno in the form of acid house, influenced by the heavy use of the Roland TB-303 for bass and lead sounds, enjoyed a surge of popularity in the mid-1980s and went on to influence acid trance and acid techno. Tech house, which came to prominence in the late 1990s, imports concepts of techno into the basic structure of house music but with a softer, deeper sound and an almost jazzy touch - partly in convergence with progressive house.
Less well-known styles related to techno or its subgenres include Yorkshire bleeps and bass or bleep, a regional variant which was prominent in the late 1980s; wonky techno; ghettotech, which combines some of the aesthetics of techno with hip-hop, house music, and Miami bass; and the subgenres of hardcore techno, including gabber, speedcore, terrorcore, breakcore and digital hardcore.

Techno had also a big influence on main-stream European disco-pop music from the late 80s with Technotronic, and the evolvement of euro-techno during the early and mid 90s, with artists such as 2 Unlimited, Snap!, Culture Beat and Corona.
In recent years, the publication of relatively accurate histories by authors Simon Reynolds (Generation Ecstasy aka Energy Flash) and Dan Sicko (Techno Rebels), plus mainstream press coverage of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, have helped to diffuse the genre's more dubious mythology. Techno has further expanded into the charts as more artists such as Orbital and Underworld have made the style break through to the mainstream pop culture while producers and DJs such as Laurent Garnier, Dave Clarke, Richie Hawtin and Jeff Mills have continued to explore newer sounds." -Wikipedia

The Cookie Crew - Born This Way! (UK 1989)

The Cookie Crew - Born This Way!
Label - FFRR
Released - 1989
Style - Electronic, Hip Hop, Breaks, House, Hip House
* per Special Request from a friend.

Tracklist:
1 Yo! What's Up
2 From The South
3 Come On And Get Some
4 Pick Up On This
5 Feelin' Proud
6 Bad Girls (Rock The Spot)
7 Got To Keep On
8 Born This Way
9 Black Is The Word
10 Places And Spaces For Your Mind
11 Rhymes And Careers
12 Dazzle's Theme

I've been meaning to post this for a while, but I had to find it first. Now that I found it, I'm really syked to post it because it's one of those highly overlooked urban gems from the late 80s that really deserves its props. The main track I knew from the album was the title song 'Born This Way (Let's Dance)' - and I only just recently became exposed to that from watching VH1 Soul's Soul School show. If you live in the states and get the VH1 Soul channel on cable, check your listings for Soul School. They play alot of the classic hip hop/r&b videos from the 80s and early 90s. There isn't alot of that stuff that I haven't come across before, but they do surprise me from time to time. Seeing the Cookie Crew video was one of those surprises. Being natives of South London, the Cookie Crew girls were obviously in touch with house music and acid house which were big in London at the time. So you can really pick up on the 'hip-house' sound they helped pioneer; a sound that gave way in the states to entire new music genres like Baltimore Club music and Nu Jack Swing. I look at it as some sort of underground Music Pathology, and I'm always looking for connections between different forms of music or sample sources and shit. So in that respect, this Cookie Crew album is seriously interesting to me. Please believe it. And enjoy it. Word.

(from Wiki)
Group Members:
* MC Remedee (real name Debbie Pryce).
* Susie Q (born Susan Banfield, 10 March 1967).

Cookie Crew is a rap music duo formed in Clapham, South London in 1983. Pryce and Banfield decided to break away from a 13-strong rap aggregation called "Warm Milk And The Cookie Crew" and make a career as a duo. In 1985 their career took off after winning a national rap championship and recording two sessions for the John Peel radio show. They gained a contract from the UK dance record label Rhythm King and were put in the studio with the production trio Beatmasters, who put them in a house music direction.

In July 1987, the resultant single "Rok Da House" (no relation to the dance single "Rock The House" by Scoop) was popular in the nightclubs and peaked at number 79 in UK Singles Chart. Their follow-up single "Females" also was a minor hit in October 1987. The continuing popularity of "Rok Da House" in nightclubs eventually renewed interest in the track and garnered a couple of television appearances. The record was re-issued at end of December 1987 and crossed over into the mainstream. The song became a Top 5 hit at the beginning of February 1988, and was even used for an advertising campaign. The track is often quoted as being the first hip house record.

The duo moved on to another label, FFRR Records and different producers, resulting in a string of hit singles in 1989, with "Born This Way (Let's Dance)", "Got To Keep On" with Edwin Starr and "Come And Get Some"; plus the album Born This Way! which reached a modest number 24 in the UK Albums Chart.

By 1992 there were differences of opinion with their then label London Records over musical direction, and the duo parted company to pursue separate projects.

V/A - Gomma Audio No. 1

V/A - Gomma Audio No. 1
Label - Shadow
Released - 2001
Style - Electronic, Leftfield, House, Abstract, Downtempo, Lee Library

Notes: compilation of tracks from the Gomma Label 1999-2001

(review from ink19.com)
Some really big names are really digging what Germany's Gomma label is doing. Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Kruder & Dorfmeister, and Les Rhythmes Digitales have raised their swords among the legion of the label's fans. In what can be considered a mixed blessing, Shadow has released some of Gomma's 1999-2001 tracks.

Gomma Audio No. 1 is most definitely an aural, dance adventure. This is music that isn't afraid to take risks, and the label distinguishes itself admirably for refusing the cliché. In the cluttered minefield of electronica's myriad genres, the music on this disc oftentimes defies categorization. However, in that stew of creativity, sometimes one comes up with gristle. Sometimes the synth effects are too '80s, like in Headman's "It's Rough," or too overbearing, which almost ruins the deep house groove of Leroy Hanghofer's "Pin." And Ike Yard's "N.C.R." is so choppy, you'd think the track had been ravaged by a Benihana chef.

The rest, however, is a spicy jambalaya of fine, edgy music that makes one realize why such big names as those previously mentioned are into Gomma. Munk has two great tracks on here; Ike Steigner's "Bela Breaks" is a heartbeat away from cardiac arrest; and Spenzer's "The Box" closes out this session with some menacing downtempo that leaves you wanting more.

Tracklisting:
1 Headman - It Rough (5:48)
2 Ike Yard - N.C.R. (Funkstörung Version) (4:59)
3 Protein - Aspik (4:18)
4 Munk - Stick Mi Amor (6:21)
5 Leroy Hanghofer - Pin (Les Rhythmes Digitales & Sloop John Baillo Rmx) (6:21)
6 Low Daddies - Pomade (8:13)
7 Protein - Yes Törti (4:01)
8 Munk - Haudig (3:55)
9 Palermo King - Murtu (4:32)
10 Headman - Rocket (4:02)
11 Ilk Steigner - Bela Breaks (7:17)

Another winner I picked up at Orpheus Records a couple weeks ago. Again, no listening station but the record looked familiar - figured I'd realize why when I got home to listen to it. Upon listening to this a moment after I took it home, I realized it was one of those records that sparked the early Baltimore Club movement (see?).
