Thøse Norwegians - Kaminzky Park

Norwegian house...

Just saying 'house' doesn't even come close. Sure, it came out on a house label - but these guys completely pull off blaxploitation funk, authentic with subtle sleazy nuances that prove what talented musicians these producers are at the core. Amazing stuff... Truly timeless!

Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite albums of all time. After this record came out, they kinda disappeared into Norwegian clouds of p00f. Enchanting!

praps to quail.egg.fish for the bullet-ridden source. p00f...

also praps to Jes Rosenberg who gave me this record at WXJM to review when it first came out in '97... miss ya dude.

MVSCLZ.

Just got a couple new mixes from my homey in Austin called MVSCLZ (aka Ben Aqua). Well that's his latest pseudonym at least; Ben is a man of many different faces and sounds. MVSCLZ plays alot of early 80s obscure-ish new-wave/electro/dub/disco stuff, which isn't necessarily much of what we post on this blog but it's always fun to switch things up every once in a while. Plus he sports ridiculous mustaches. Keepin it free-form, ya know...

This guy also sometimes performs in a 1-man fantasy metal band called ASSACRE (yes!!), which has been described as a continuous shredding guitar solo. While Wikipedia elaborates like this:

After releasing a demo in 2004 entitled Impossibly Silent, ASSACRE began making a name for himself throughout Texas with his wild, confrontational, and unpredictable performances. He is often extravagantly costumed in concert and in photographs. The costumes, which he creates himself, result in the visual aspect of the project becoming as important as the musical.

ASSACRE ambitiously toured the USA in the summer of 2005 in support of his first full-length release, Fantastic Illusions Worth Dying For (Awthum Records, August 2005). The album features 8 tracks of fantasy, death, and thrash metal mixed with bizarre, abstract sound collages, displaying a wide array of musical influences - from Death to Klaus Nomi to Merzbow to Sun Ra.

So anyways, this post isn't primarily about Assacre but I just think the notion is so ridiculous that it demands attention. For more on Assacre, peep the myspace: http://myspace.com/assacre.

Piero Piccioni - Una Tomba Aperta...Una Bara Vuota

Piero Piccioni - Una Tomba Aperta...Una Bara Vuota
Released - 1972/1982
Label - Beat Records (IT)/CAM
Style - Electronic, Disco, Italo, Funk, Electro, Soundtrack

Notes:
Tracks 1-12 are from the soundtrack to Italian cult/horror director Lucio Fulci's Lo Squartatore Di New York (aka The New York Ripper), made in 1982.
Tracks 13-20 are from the soundtrack to the Spanish/Italian giallo film Una Tomba Aperta... Una Bara Vuota, directed by Alfonso Balcázar in 1972.

(review from ScoreBaby):
This is an odd double feature. Piero Piccioni's Open Grave, Empty Coffin actually plays second. The New York Ripper plays first and that's good since it's better than the Piccioni score. Trovaioli's score has greater dynamics than Piccioni's, so it deserves to be first. The New York Ripper features soulful, latin-tinged disco funk like "New York One Night", one version using heavily flanged electric guitar. The beginning of "Puertorico Club" is as stripped down as any electronica I've heard. Tension tracks, like "The Ripper" and "Where is the Ripper?" are truly effective. I haven't seen the movie (which is notoriously violent), but the soundtrack is quite compelling and practically serves as an effective substitute for watching the movie. Piccioni's score for Open Grave, Empty Coffin (how noir can you get!) is more about atmosphere than it is about rhythm. A full orchestra saws away dark, demented passages. Other tracks are dreamier, mysterious and tender.

Cedric Im Brooks & The Light Of Saba

Cedric Im Brooks & The Light Of Saba

Label - Honest Jon's Records
Released - 2003
Style - Dub, Roots, Reggae, Nyabinghi, Calypso, Jazz, Funk, Afro Funk, Disco, Lee Library

(from Astralwerks.com):
"Cedric "Im" Brooks’ is arguably the most innovative saxophone players in all of reggae music. His stunning fusion of jazz, Afro-beat, funk and Latin with reggae sets him apart as a true pioneer, radically altering the limits and expectations of what reggae music could sound like. Born in Jamaica, Cedric Brooks toured Caribbean hotels and clubs with various big bands and combos in the 1960's.

All the time, however, his own musical horizons - especially the breakthrough of new jazz - grew increasingly distant from the constrained, commercial music he had to play.

So when the chance came to visit America, Brooks eagerly accepted the opportunity. It was there that he became awe-struck by the music and vibes of jazz legend Sun Ra and Sonny Rollins. He was on the point of joining Sun Ra when the birth of his second daughter necessitated his return to Jamaica. Despite reggae being in full swing on the island, Cedric took up Sun Ra's challenge by moving beyond reggae's rocksteady beat by experimenting with free jazz and poetry, African robes and dancers. And so he formed his group The Light of Saba, taking leads from Hugh Masekela and Fela Kuti creating a multi-cultural 'world music' way ahead of its time.

The Light of Saba collects 18 Of Cedric Brooks' most exhilarating tracks blending African and US, Cuban and other West Indian influences - calypso and funk, rhumba, jazz bebop, nyabinghi and even '70s disco - on top of a foundation of sunny, warm reggae music. All the originals go for big bucks & are impossible to find. If you’ve never heard of Cedric Brooks before, then get ready to experience reggae in ways you never thought possible."
