Kemet Crew - Champion Jungle Sound

*Special Request!

Back to 1995 with this one. The era of real ruffneck Ragga Jungle; brutal Amens, a handful of Ya Bad Sistas, raggamuffin vocals about murder, gunshots and a rude amount of bass. I've never personally smoked crack, but this is what I imagine crack would sound like if it came out of your speakers. Get mash up.

Big thanks to the G the R the I the T the T the Y for the contribution ;)

Change up the style

Lee Library has some dark corners we haven't exposed quite yet, so now is when we flex the oldschool Jungle/Drum'n'Bass comps. We've watched the Jungle/DnB output go from original and groundbreaking in 1993/94 to completely unoriginal and boring by 2001+. There's only so far you can take this sound/tempo before you start regurgitating what's already been done, and that's clearly the state of things today. People are still into it, and they still have the little dj nights here in town that cater exclusively to Dudestep or Wobble (I prefer the term Dudestep). And there's the Liquid Funk contingent as well, catering to more of the jazzy funk-oriented Drum'n'Bass. But I much prefer the sound of pre-1996 Jungle/Drum'n'Bass. It's much more concentrated and raw, and the focus was primarily on the breaks back then. Pitch many of these tunes down 3 octaves and you have a real treat! So anyways, hope people enjoy these. It's not material you will easily find anywhere these days since the label stopped production on these compilations.

V/A - Jungle Tekno 4: Intelligence + Technology
Label - Jumpin' & Pumpin'
Released - 1994
Style - Electronic, Drum'n'Bass, Jungle, Lee Library

Tracklist:
1 Randall & Andy C - Sound Control (6:04)
2 Area 39 - Attidude (6:00)
3 Asend & Ultravibe - What Kind Of World? (5:59)
4 Marvellous Cain - Hit Man (5:30)

7 Higher Sense - Listen Up (5:25)
8 A-Zone - Calling All The People (Remix) (5:50)

10 The JB - Stand Easy (6:06)
11 A-Sides & Nut-E-1 - Tonight (7:15)
12 Chaos & Julia Set - Natural High (7:16)

Not much to say about these Jungle Tekno comps except that they're all extremely impressive. Alot of people are familiar with Drum'n'Bass but not many know the history behind it, and many aren't familiar with the early Jungle records that paved the way for Drum'n'Bass. This Jungle Tekno series, along with other Jumpin' & Pumpin' series, does a great job of culling the really important tracks from the earlier years of Jungle/DnB. It's hard to find any documentation online which might shed some light on the history of the Jumpin' & Pumpin' label, but they've consistently released some of the best electronic dance music in my lifetime. Just browsing through their discography, you'll see the broad range they cover from oldschool UK hardcore to FSOL/ambient stuff and then a number of solid compilations. This comp is probably my favorite from the Jungle Tekno series. More along the lines of jazzy/early atmospheric drum'n'bass and I love all that stuff. Especially when pitched down a few octaves ;)

From sleeve:
"Selected by Grooverider, from his sets played out around the world, "Hardstep Selection" is a mixture of drum & bass and ragga styles of jungle. These tracks are some of the best floor fillers on the jungle circuit, each having been carefully selected to embrace the various styles within the scene."

From wiki:
The phrase "drum and bass" had been used for years previously in the London soul and funk pirate radio scenes and was even a bit of a catchphrase for UK Radio 1's R&B Guru Trevor Nelson in his pirate days, who used it to describe the deeper, rougher funk and "rare groove" sound that was popular in London at the time. A station ID jingle used on legendary London pirate Kiss FM from the late 1980s would proclaim "drum and bass style on Kiss".

However, as the early nineties saw drum and bass break out from its underground roots and begin to win popularity with the general British public, many producers attempted to expand the influences of the music beyond the domination of ragga-based sounds. By 1995, a counter movement to the ragga style was emerging, dubbed "intelligent" drum and bass by the music press, and its ambassador was LTJ Bukem and his Good Looking label alongside Moving Shadow artists such as Foul Play, Omni Trio and Cloud 9.

Since the term jungle was so closely related to the raggae influenced sound, DJs and producers who did not incorporate reggae elements began to adopt the term "drum and bass" to differentiate themselves and their musical styles. Ironically, the compilation which had brought the term to the wider awareness of those outside the scene, 'Drum & Bass Selection vol 1' (1994), featured a large amount of ragga influenced tracks, and the first big track to use the term in its title (Remarc's 'Drum & Bass Wize', 1994) was also a ragga jump-up tune. It is fair to say the media did not help matters here by emphasising the supposed difference in styles.
