V/A - Gilles Peterson in Brazil

V/A - Gilles Peterson in Brazil
Label - Ether (UK)
Release - 2004
Style - Brazil, Bossa Nova, Samba, Electronic, Drum and Bass, Lee Library

(from Dusty Groove):
A soaring selection of Brazilian groove -- selected by the great Gilles Peterson -- one of the best collections ever assembled by the world famous DJ! Gilles goes way past the obvious for the sets, which are divided into two discs -- one for classic tracks (many of which are actually woefully under-appreciated, in the grand scheme) and a second disc of recent tracks and remixes. The mood is really soaring and soulful throughout -- groovy sambas mingle with Brazilian jazz and soul tunes, and cheeky psychedelia-steeped 60s sunshine on the first disc. The mood on disc two is wholly reverent of the samba roots, but it's also awash in modern club grooves -- with sputtering post drum & bass, a hip hop beat track sensibility on others, and a straight driving club groove on still others!

Walter Wanderley - Moondreams

Walter Wanderley - Moondreams
Label - A&M/CTI (Japan)
Released - 1969
Style - Jazz, Bossa Nova, Brazil, Funk, Lee Library

(From Dusty Groove):
Walter Wanderley opens up wonderfully on both organ and electric harpsichord here -- going for a very different sound than on his earlier records, and with plenty of great late 60s CTI touches! The music is as heavenly as you might guess from the title -- a dreamy recasting of Brazilian bossa modes with some of the sunnier 60s touches of the A&M scene -- all wrapped together with impeccable arrangements both from Deodato and Wanderley himself. The record mixes a bit of strings with a sweet chorus of flutes and just a bit of trumpet -- all undercut by some snapping rhythms that include a bit of percussion from Airto, plus occasional chorus vocals sung by Flora Purim and Stella Stevens! The mix of players, modes and sounds here is really wonderful -- and makes for a unique album that propels the older 60s bossa sound firmly towards the more sophisticated modes of the 70s -- all at a level that Wanderley never hit again in the studio! Titles include great versions of Marcos Valle's "Proton, Electron, Neutron", Egberto Gismonti's "O Sonho (Moondreams)", Luiz Gonzaga's "Asa Branca", and Young-Holt Unlimited's classic "Soulful Strut" -- plus "Penha", "L'Amore Dice Ciao", "5:30 Plane", and "Mirror Of Love".

Tracklist:
1. Asa Branca
2. L'amore Dice Ciao
3. Penha
4. One Of The Nicer Things

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Wave

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Wave
Label - A&M/CTI (Japan)
Released - 1967
Style - Bossa Nova, Jazz, Brazil, Lee Library

(From here):
Notes: Known more for his "Ipanema" and "Samba" tunes Jobim has a way of bringing the Brazilian night into a jazz framework and making both partners happy about the situation. Relaxing, soft music with the underlying rhythm and sway of the breeze or the water upon the sand. The "Boss of the Bossa Nova" with his large backing ensemble makes beautiful music here for all to enjoy. I'm not sure how the giraffe photo fits into the picture, but I first found the green cover and a little later came across the red one. A good record in either shade.

Tracklist:
1. "Wave" – 2:58
2. "The Red Blouse" – 5:06
3. "Look to the Sky" – 2:20
4. "Batidinha" – 3:15
5. "Triste" – 2:04

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Tide

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Tide
Label - A&M/CTI (Japan)
Released - 1970
Style - Jazz, Bossa Nova, Latin, Brazil, Lee Library

(from Dusty Groove):
An incredible record -- from the first off-key note to the last! The album's filled with some wonderfully moody LA studio sounds, arranged by Deodato, and a has a great swirling mix of sound that weaves around Jobim's lofty guitar and piano. From the first note, you can feel the strange magic of Jobim and Deodato at work -- as the album appears to be smooth and mellow, yet has a strangely unsettling undertone that keeps us coming back after all these years! Tracks include "Tema Jazz", "Carinhoso", "Rockanalia", and a nice remake of "Girl From Ipanema". Plus, the CD features 4 bonus alternate versions, including an 8 minute take of "Tema Jazz"!

1. The Girl From Ipanema

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Stone Flower

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Stone Flower
Label - A&M/CTI (Japan)
Released - 1970
Style - Jazz, Bossa Nova, Latin, Brazil, Lee Library

(from Dusty Groove):
One of Antonio Carlos Jobim's greatest records -- and a perfect blend of his subtle bossa genius with the moody electric sound of CTI! Jobim plays electric and acoustic piano, guitar, and sings a bit -- and Deodato handled the arrangements with a breezy brilliance that matches all the magic of Jobim's wonderful compositions, but gives them a slightly more fluid feel too -- in a way that's somewhat more sophisticated than the sound of Jobim's previous CTI outings -- Tide and Wave. Other players on the album include Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, and Airto on percussion -- and there's a great mix of Brazilian and American styles on the set -- electric, sinister, breezy, and always wonderful! Includes the titles "Sabia", "God & The Devil In The Land Of The Sun", "Children's Games", "Stone Flower", "Brazil", "Tereza My Love", and "Choro".

Tracklist:
1. Tereza My Love
2. Children's Games

21 Tarzan Dance

(from Dusty Groove)
Excellent lost funky work from Italy! The Barigozzi Group were one of these obscure little combos that churned out tight funky tracks for bigger outfits -- very much in the style of I Gres, Marc 4, or some of the other great Italian groups that are being discovered lately. Their strength was a great keyboard sound, augmented by some wonderfully produced guitars, nicely flanged or wah-wahed, and some excellent drums, played in a nice tight stiffly rhythmic style. This package includes a whopping 21 cuts pulled from 3 lost alubms -- all wrapped up in a wonderful looking cover that's one of the nicest Easy Tempo have dropped on us to date! Titles include "Tarzan Dance", "Blue Hairs", "Silver Legs", "Ivory Breast", "Black Heart", "Theme For Aretha", "Hong Kong Wind", and "Message From the Jungle". Great stuff!

(from Score Baby)
Although the music collected on The Optical Sound isn't soundtrack music per se, it clearly falls into the related camp of Sound Library.

Fans of the Easy Tempo series will recognize three of the 21 tracks here from Vol. 2: Psycho Beat. All three came from one of the original records collected on this Barigozzi Group collection. The tracks "Silver Legs" "Red Face" and "Violet Lips" come from Woman's Colours, which was originally released on Minstrel. The other records collected here are Rock in the Air and The Tropicals, both of which were released on Jump. Though the original release dates aren't noted, all could be dated in that critical period of the late 60s, early 70s.

Most of the tracks adhere to a no nonsense groovy loungecore sensibility. The group's sound boasts soulful organ and piano, tight brass, raspy flute, rolling electric bass lines and crisp funky drumming. And the stuff from The Tropicals has an exotica feel in the arrangements.
