"Very nice reissue of this totally rare album of funky instrumentals by a lost Parisian combo with a tight choppy guitar sound, and a nice dope organ/keyboard groove. In their best moments, the group has a bit of a War sound -- with a slow, stripped-down approach to their funk, and heavy Latin lines on the bass and keyboards. At other times, the groove's a bit more uptempo, with tight guitar riffs, and loud horn blasts. The whole thing's produced with a sound that's just right for some of the Mood Mosaic comps, and the material's got a nice 70's sound that's not too overdone. Tracks include "Paris Soul", "Hang Out", "Black Waders", "Platano Split", and "Woluwe Strip". Pressed up on very nice vinyl, and an extremely faithful reproduction of the original!"

Heist films always provided some of the best soundtracks of the 70's, and this one (starring Robert Shaw and Richard Roundtree, and issued in the US as Diamond Shaft) is no exception! Roy Budd rises to the groovy occasion and scores some excellent moments that match a light orchestral sound with a throbbing electric bass and percussion underground -- in a style that's like Lalo Schifrin's best work from the time. The LP's overflowing with tracks, including a few bonus mixes, and there's even 2 vocal numbers that feature The Three Degrees. Titles include "The Thief", "Beauty & The Bass", "Diamonds", "Party Piece", "Thief On the Prowl", and more! Nice notes, and some nicely funky crime themes, too! Nice gatefold cover, too!

Only issued in Italy (as 'Colpa Da Un Miliardo Di Dollari', shown here) and the UK, this is without doubt Budd's finest soundtrack. Elements of his earlier work can be clearly heard in the Middle Eastern segments of the LP and use of distinctive instrumentation. The album features music from a surprisingly good heist movie starring Richard Roundtree, shot in Israel. Many of the best tracks were not included in the movie. The album contains raw funk ('The Thief'), jazz ('Party Piece'), an easy listening-with-wah bossa nova ('Brauty And The Bass') and a sentimental soulful theme by the Three Degrees in addition to some excellent atmospheric Eastern-influenced tracks. Look out for Budd's trademark use of deep bass to underpin his dark, menacing funk themes. Quite superb.

This is the original soundtrack for the classic blacksploitation horror flick starring the baaadest Dracula ever to grace the screen of all those shabby downtown theaters that were still around in the 70's -- a wicked batch of wah-wah tunes penned by Gene Page, and featuring a great bit fo keyboards as well! The set's got a few vocal numbers, sung by 21st Century Ltd and The Hues Corporation, but it's the instrumentals that really steal the show here -- and there's plenty of great ones here that rank with the best blacksploitation work of the decade! A guaranteed dancefloor monster, featuring a superb vocal number by The Four Tops at their peak, and simply magnificent keyboard-driven big band funk from Johnny Pate. An essential album.

Pate does a brilliant job with the Shaft in Africa soundtrack by combining explosive percussion-heavy funk and tender soul songs to give us one of the best blaxploitation soundtracks ever!

The track, from the 1973 soundtrack of the same name, is prominently featured in "Show Me What You Got," the lead single from Jay-Z's new "Kingdom Come" (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam), and "We Gon' Make It," the opening song from Diddy's recently released "Press Play" (Bad Boy).

This LP features music allegedly 'inspired by' one of the most offensive movies of all time. The Thing With Two Heads was a man with one white head and one black head. Needless to say, the movie was released through American International. However, the soundtrack contains tracks culled from the MGM/Pride catalog and appears to be effectively a compilation of tracks from other Pride LPs. It does feature two great instrumentals by The Incredible Bongo Band, 'Bongo Rock 72' and 'Bongolia', very hard to find elsewhere. The rest of the album is a mix of seventies soul and vocal numbers.

Plot:
Lee Daniels (portrayed by Pam Grier), a prostitute doing hard time in an island prison camp for women where the guards have a new way to punish inmates who fight: by cuffing them together. Chained to her bitter rival, white revolutionary Karen Brent (portrayed by Margaret Markov), Lee finds herself literally linked to the revolutionary cause, and on the fly, when Karen's guerilla friends stage a coup. But Lee has a cause of her own in the form of a secret stash of cash and a getaway boat. Brawling with her white counterpart over which way to go, she's got to make her escape, before both mamas' enemies bring them down.




Funky ass soundtrack! Harry Betts' score for Black Mama, White Mama is funky but fraught with dramatic tension. On Black Mama, White Mama, Latin percussion underscores episodic passages of mounting danger ("Police Check Point") and flight ("Bloodhounds").

A classic bit of 70s funk from Germany -- and a long-lost treasure finally back out again on reissue! This rare 1975 set was the brainchild of 3 of Germany's funkiest jazz players -- drummer Charly Antolini, whose drums crackled on some of the best MPS recordings; keyboardist Max Greger Jr, who made some great straighter albums in the 60s; and bassist Milan Pilar, an electric player with a really warm and round tone. Together, the trio grooves through some excellent funky numbers -- really jamming with a soulful groove, as Greger switches effortlessly between piano, moog, Fender Rhodes, mellotron, and organ! Includes the funky break classic "Onkel Joe" -- plus gems like "Moonlight On a Bald Head", "Catch Up", "Blues For The Kaiser", "Lydia", and "Spinning Wheel". Their first album 'Catch Up' was recorded in 1975 in the legendary Munich Studios, for the label Calig. Rare Groove addicts consider this album as a speciality.

This is another one of my favorite Blaxploitation-era (i hate calling it that, but it is what it is) funk soundtracks. I've recognized little bits and pieces from various hip-hop and R&B songs that were made much later, but the one that really sticks out is from 'Out There.' The intro to that track and the distant "Out There" echoed sample I've heard in more than one production. Great funky, sleazy stuff!

The title -- Soho Lounge Heat -- makes this top shelf collection of library music from Cavendish and Boosey & Hawkes studios circa 1969-77 sound like some nu-jazz "chill" collection for the night spot du jour. But be not detered, Soho Lounge Heat delivers cinematic funky grooves of the highest order.

Composed and arranged primarily by Dennis Farnon (along with Trevor Duncan, John Cacavas, Pete Moore, John Scott and Sam Fonteyn), the set may span '69-'77, but the bulk comes from '72 and '74.

Fans of sound library collections like Luke Vibert's Nuggets, Le Jazzbeat, Stereo Ultra and Stroboscopica will really dig this EMI release. There's plenty of throbbing bass, funky drums and a jazzy cinematic vibe that just won't quit.

Some of the titles are telling: "The Trackers," "The Big Score," "Acapulco Connection," "Border Incident," "Shanghai Caper," "The Armenian File," and so on. This is the soundtrack for the movie in your mind.

A welcome repressing of another of Piero Umiliani's fantastic library records from the early 70s when he established his own publishing company and studios (also see The Man and the City).

The original LP, only pressed in 300 copies exchanges hands for about $500 or more. Some of the tracks on To-Day's Sound were used in movies; apparently the track "Open Space" is used at the start of Baba Yaga (1973).

This CD is filled with cool groovy little cuts featuring the maestro himself on moog, Fender Rhodes, and marimba -- plus instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, and Lowry and Hammond organs. Even more wild than the classic Sweden Heaven & Hell LP, with cool little cuts like "Safari Club", "Free Dimension", "Truck Driver", and "Music on the Road". Wonderful stuff from 1971 -- and another reason why the forces of time and space are converging on the late 90's to make this the best time ever to sample groovy music from around the globe!

CripDick's three volumes of "raunchy, erotic filmmusic from the vaults of Italian 60s & 70s cinema" are indispensable to fans of groovy soundtracks. Each volume offers up such musicmakers as Riz Ortolani, Bruno Nicolai, Piero Piccioni and Armando Trovaioli, just to name a few. And, like every CripDick release, these are copiously illustrated and feature incisive liner notes. It would be difficult to rate each volume seperately, since each disc has its share of outstanding jazz funk sleaze and a track or two of lounge filler.

Volume 1's highlights include Teo Usuelli's "Piacere Sequence" and Picconi's "Traffic Boom", both of which were used in the Coen Brother's movie The Big Lebowski in a suitably sleazy context.

A great collection of 'lost' tracks from the archives of 60's & 70's library music publishers (De Wolfe, KPM, Selected Sound, KTS-Produktion Musik Verlag). For those that don't know, library music was created for use in film and TV and rented to production companies that couldn't afford to have original music composed for their films/tv shows. Track one sampled by The Smut Peddlers. All killer grooves!

Excellent lost funky work from Italy! The Barigozzi Group were one of these obscure little combos that churned out tight funky tracks for bigger outfits -- very much in the style of I Gres, Marc 4, or some of the other great Italian groups that are being discovered lately. Their strength was a great keyboard sound, augmented by some wonderfully produced guitars, nicely flanged or wah-wahed, and some excellent drums, played in a nice tight stiffly rhythmic style. Although the music collected on The Optical Sound isn't soundtrack music per se, it clearly falls into the related camp of Sound Library.

Fans of the Easy Tempo series will recognize three of the 21 tracks here from Vol. 2: Psycho Beat. All three came from one of the original records collected on this Barigozzi Group collection. The tracks "Silver Legs" "Red Face" and "Violet Lips" come from Woman's Colours, which was originally released on Minstrel. The other records collected here are Rock in the Air and The Tropicals, both of which were released on Jump. Though the original release dates aren't noted, all could be dated in that critical period of the late 60s, early 70s.

Most of the tracks adhere to a no nonsense groovy loungecore sensibility. The group's sound boasts soulful organ and piano, tight brass, raspy flute, rolling electric bass lines and crisp funky drumming. And the stuff from The Tropicals has an exotica feel in the arrangements.

Wow. Le JazzBeat! Vol. 2 is a great compilation featuring 16 killer tracks from the French library label "L'Illustration Musicale" (IM).

Started by jazz pianist Eddie Warner in 1965 as a publishing company, "L'Illustration Musicale" soon capitalised on the growing library music industry by recording and releasing tracks of their own.

"L'Illustration Musicale" produced 26 of their own library music LPs, which are now highly sought after. This great CD showcases the best of L'Illustration Musicale's output and contains a superb range of styles - jazzy, funky, moody and electronic.

Deep Funk is a underground genre of funk music which, unlike traditional mainstream funk, has a more soulful, rawer, grittier, and "heavier" sound. The term "deep funk" is also the name of the scene of collectors, DJ's, and musicians who are into deep funk as a genre.

It got its name after Keb Darge's "Legendary Deep Funk" DJ night, held at Madame Jojo's nightclub in London's Soho district.

The focus of the scene is collecting and DJing rare funk 45's, usually released originally by local funk groups & artists in the USA throughout the 1960s and 70s that usually stayed in their local home bases, only playing nearby clubs and other venues, and releasing their music on small local & regional record labels at the time in the form of 7" 45 rpm singles in quite small quantities (usually about 1000-5000 copies or less), hence their extreme rarity and high collectible value. Most of these records have quite high re-sale values due to their paucity, with some going for 4, and sometimes 5, figures.

Keb Darge, along with collaborating artists such as Pete Rock, RZA, and DJ Shadow, has released a series of so far three Deep Funk compilations called Funk Spectrum (Volumes I, II and III), released on BBE Records, and featuring classic releases of the genre, as well as modern-day deep funk/"new funk" groups such as The New Mastersounds, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Connie Price & The Keystones, Quantic, and others.

After Nuggets - Luke Vibert's selection and Barry 7's Connectors comes music just as far out and even more damn funky.

Because You're Funky brings together 24 seriously fried instrumentals from the collection of the legendary Rustler - a veteran of 20 years on the underground soul scene - bordering on Psych, heavy on the breaks, make no mistake this is extreme music.

But don't think for a minute that Lo Recordings are going all retro on your ass. As we said before, sometimes you got to go back to go forwards.
This is the root of all that is funky from George Clinton to Prince, A Certain Ratio to 23 Skidoo, Derrick May to Timo Mass, Autechre to Aphex, Public Enemy to the Wu Tang clan. Without this shit no one would be feeling the funk.

Some of these tracks are so rare that even DJ Shadow doesn't have them and some are so far out that no one but The Rustler would play
them (!) and a couple of the tracks have been subject to four figure bids from the likes of Kenny "Dope" Gonzales an Ian "Praying Mantis" Wright.

All the cuts are from the late 60s, early 70s , that pre disco, no drum machine era when men were men, women were women and funk was most definitely funky.

It took Lo Recordings 2 years to persuade The Rustler to let these gems into the public domain. Let's hope the world is ready.
