Glen Brown is one of the unsung heroes of Jamaican music. He began as a singer in the 60's, developed his skill as a melodica player, and then made his indelible mark as a producer in the 70's. His forte was the rhythm. Not the bouncing, melodic bass of Studio One, but the heavy pounding rhythms ideally suited to the era of Rasta militance. Typically he would develop a new rhythm, make umpteen cuts with various singers and DJs, hand them over to King Tubby for mixing, and then move on to the next one. Burning Spear - 100th Anniversary (Marcus Garvey + Garvey's Ghost)

Rodney retires to St. Ann’s Bay to contemplate his next move. He is approached by local sound system operator Jack Ruby, who offers a 50/50 partnership. The first single the pair produces, “Marcus Garvey," provides a new template for Burning Spear, now a trio with the addition of Delroy Hinds (brother of ska vocalist Justin Hinds). The partnership between Ruby and Spear produces one of the all-time great reggae records, Marcus Garvey. Whereas the Studio One sound is increasingly stuck in the past, Marcus Garvey is the sound of the present, blending the early ‘70s Wailers sound (best captured on Burnin’ and Talking Blues) with plaintive horns, chanted lyrics and jazz-tinged guitar work from veteran session player Earl "Chinna" Smith. Always intended as an album-length statement, each song iterates different aspects of Garveyism and Rasta teaching. The title tune single-handedly revives interest in Garvey's life and teachings, which had been overshadowed by the more radical black leaders of the ‘60s.

Ruby, in an interview with Carl Gayle in the liner notes of 2001 Spear Records compilation Spear Burning, recounts: “The first evening Burning Spear album come out, two thousand album come in [the office] and I couldn’t get a copy to carry home. People line up; two thousand record come without jacket and I, the producer, couldn’t get a copy.”

Internationally, the album is released on Island. As had been done with Marley's Island releases, the mix of the album is lightened, lessening the bass and speeding up tracks. Rodney’s take on this, from Spear Burning’s liner notes, is less furious than philosophical: “Island never notify the artists but try to adjust and fit in with the vibes that were going on at the time. Changed up everything. Better they left the album the way it was created.” Many fans castigate Island to this day for messing with this masterpiece and subsequent recordings. Rodney starts Spear Records as an outlet for his own productions without the interference of other parties; the label would last until 1979. Despite his lack of hands-on studio experience or musical training, Spear is able to achieve his own sound without Jack Ruby’s production expertise. Harry A. Mudie (born c. 1940 in Spanish Town, Jamaica) is a Jamaican record producer.
He attended St. Jago High School. In the mid fifties, he launched his own sound system "Mudies Hi-Fi", before going to the UK to study electronics and photography. He traveled back to Jamaica in the late 50s. His first production was "Babylon Gone" (1962) by nyabinghi drummer Count Ossie and saxophonist Wilton Gaynair (released in the UK in 1962 on Blue Beat). Mudie spent his time in the 60s mainly operating his "Scaramouch Garden Amusement Center" in Spanish Town . He came back to music in the late 60s with the launch of Moodisc label and by recording artists such as Winston Wright, Winston Shand, Lloyd Jones, Count Ossie and the then-unknown I Roy. In the early 70s, he was the first to record Big Joe. Another first was the use of strings in reggae (John Holt "Time is the Master" in 1973). During the peak of his music career in the mid-late 70s, he worked with Gregory Isaacs, The Heptones, Joe White, Prince Heron and others. He has produced numerous musicians on his different labels which include Moodisc, Jungle, Afro and Jukebox. Mudie relocated to Florida in the 80s where he still resides.

Black Ark

"The Black Ark
The Black Ark was the recording studio of legendary reggae and dub producer Lee "Scratch" Perry, located in the yard of his family's home in the Washington Gardens neighborhood of Kingston, Jamaica. Although the studio itself was somewhat rudimentary in its set-up and particularly basic with regard to some of the dated equipment employed by Perry, it was nonetheless the breeding ground for some of Jamaica's (and arguably the world's) most innovative sounds and recording techniques in the latter half of the 1970s.

Innovative musical techniques
An example of Lee Perry's inventive style was his ability to overdub layers of sound effects and instrumentation on each recording track of a basic 4-track machine, with such precise timing and in such a way that the resulting sound would destroy the competition from Jamaica's other top producers using the latest 16-track mixing consoles. Perry once buried microphones at the base of a palm tree and thumped it rhythmically to produce a mystifying bass drum effect; his drum booth at the Black Ark was for a time surrounded with chicken wire to further his distinctive sound; many of his songs are layered with a variety of subtle effects created from broken glass, ghastly sighs and screeches, crying babies, and a mooing cow children's toy. These and other notable recording techniques helped define the Black Ark sound, as well as Lee Perry's creative legacy.

Musicians and the Black Ark
In addition to providing pioneering sounds for such reggae stars as Bob Marley and The Wailers, Junior Byles, and Max Romeo, Lee Perry and his studio were formative in creating the highly innovative reggae sub-genre called Dub, in which the producer/engineer becomes the focus of the music, manipulating a pre-recorded track and creating something entirely new using his or her mixing console as nothing less than an instrument.

The end
In 1979, following years of increasingly bizarre and erratic behavior, Lee "Scratch" Perry allegedly set fire to The Black Ark studio, effectively ending an era during which much of Jamaica's most delightfully creative sounds had captured the world of music. However, it has been related by several Perry family members that the studio in fact caught fire in 1983 after an ill-fated attempt to rebuild it, the result of an electrical accident. More often than not, Perry has claimed that he personally destroyed the Black Ark due to "unclean spirits" - an allusion to some of the undesirable people who were constantly at the Black Ark in later years." -Wikipedia

Treasure Isle Studio’s,33 Bond Street, was one of the main contenders to the Studio 1 crown.So many hits came from it’s wooded loft premises that it seemed every track was destined to become a hit, propelled by the Trojan himself Mr Duke Reid.

Arthur ‘Duke’ Reid [b.1915, Jamaica] had spent ten years as a Kingston policeman when he and his wife Lucille [after winning a substantial Jamaican National lottery] decided to buy The Treasure Isle Liquor Store in Kingston, Jamaica. Wanting music to attract customers, the Duke arranged through a sponsorship deal to host his own radio show ‘Treasure Isle Time’. The people would listen to the latest American R&B tunes, interspersed with liquor deals going down at his store. This in time would lead to the starting of his own Sound System, where he could take his liquor to the dances via his Trojan truck. With shouts of ‘Here comes the Trojan’, Duke Reid’s now named Trojan Sound System was born. It proved such a success that he was crowned King of Sound and Blues three years in a row 1956, 1957 and 1958. 1958 also saw the store which was out growing itself, move to its legendary premises, 33 Bond Street.

Duke Reid was a formidable character in the music business. His guns from his policing days were ever present and always on show, striking a menacing cord. It was also not unheard of for a few rounds to be let off, if the need arose. But it was his extensive knowledge of the R&B tunes,and knowing what the people liked to here that was his real strength. Like Coxsone Dodd at Studio 1 he would travel to America to acquire the latest cuts. But this was proving more difficult due to America’s tastes moving on to Rock & Roll, which was not so popular in Jamaica.

The obvious step was to record their own tunes to supply the demand. This proved so popular with cuts like ‘Duke’s Cookies’, ’What makes Honey’ and the ‘Joker’. The next step would be to open his own recording studio which he did in the loft above his store. It was 1962 and Treasure Isle Studio’s was open for business.

1962 - 1966 was a prolific time at Treasure Isle, the Ska hits kept coming. His resident engineer Byron Smith and later Syd Bucknor’s work with artists like Stranger Cole, The Techniques, Justin Hinds and the Dominoes and the great Alton Ellis and the Flames, proved a winning formula. Such was the output that the releases were spread over three labels, Treasure Isle, Duke Reid and Duchess [a name he often used to refer to his wife].

1968-1969 saw the beat slowing down and reggae was evolving into Rocksteady and again Duke had his finger on the pulse. Working with guitarist Ernest Ranglin and the great sax player Tommy McCook and the Supersonics, the hits flowed from the studio. The Paragons ‘Wear you to the Ball’, Alton Ellis’s ‘Rock Steady’, The Melodians ‘Last train to Expo’ and The Technique’s rendition of the Curtis Mayfield classic ‘Queen Majesty’ were all big hits of the day. By using his classic backing tracks and interspersing the dubbed vocal along side his Sound System DJ’s rants and raves, his tunes became hits once more. The irrepressible U Roy cut ‘Wake this Town’ a version of Alton Ellis’s ‘Girl I’ve Got a Date’, ’Rule the Nation’, rode the Techniques ‘You Don’t Care’ and ‘Wear you to the Ball’ the Paragons hit of the same name, became three hits in a row in the Jamaican charts...an unheard of feat....

For this collection with have put together a set of rare dubs recorded at the legendary studio. Such classics as the for mentioned ‘Queen Majesty’, Alton Ellis’s ‘I’m Just a Guy’, The Ethiopians ‘Everything Crash’. All great tunes and classic rhythms, the atmosphere and the guidance of the seasoned engineers Byron Smith and Syd Bucknor alongside the top musicians, set the tone for these classic lost till now recordings.
