Scientist

Scientist, born Overton Brown in Kingston, Jamaica, 1960 (and also known as Hopeton Brown), was a protégé of King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock), one of the originators of dub music. He left King Tubby’s studio at the end of the 1970s and became the principal engineer for Channel One Studio when hired by the Hoo Kim brothers.
He came to prominence in the early 1980s and produced many albums, his mixes featuring on many releases in the first part of the decade. In particular, he was the favourite engineer of Henry "Junjo" Lawes, for whom he mixed several albums released on Greensleeves Records. He also did a lot of work for Linval Thompson and Jah Thomas. In 1982 he left for Tuff Gong to assist Errol Brown. He then emigrated to the Washington, D.C. area in 1985, again to work in studios as a sound engineer.

Many fans came to know his music due to half of his album 'Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires' being used on the soundtrack for the popular videogame Grand Theft Auto III. The tracks on the fictitious radio station 'K-Jah' are composed entirely of songs from this album. However, Scientist received no royalties for this and sued Rockstar Games unsuccessfully in a US court. The court ruled that according to precedent a recording mixer was not considered the author of a musical work, and so Rockstar were correct to treat the producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes as the copyright holder of the album.

This ruling could be argued to neglect the fundamental difference between dub-reggae and other kinds of music - after all, the album is marketed as 'Scientist rids the world of the evil curse of the vampires': so the publishers and self identified licensors are prepared to attribute authorship to Hopeton Brown when it suits them, but not when it comes to paying him royalties. It can, however, be argued that Scientist was introduced to a much larger audience as a result of the licensing of his album to Rockstar, in which case he may have sold more albums as a result.

Scientist also tours from time to time as a band engineer and producer for the reggae acts that he is currently promoting. His wildly creative artistic style has resulted in the destruction of loudspeakers in the venues where he was controlling the sound balance. As a result, Scientist has been banned from touching the sound equipment in several San Francisco and New York City clubs and studios. ~wikipedia

Wack Attack - Subterannean Homesick Blues (Look Out Kid)

Wack Attack - Subterannean Homesick Blues (Look Out Kid)
Label - Invasion
Released - 1986
Style - Funk/Rap

No Info whatsoever. But 'Wack Attack' and 'Attack the Wack' are recurring phrases in Dolemite's Disco Godfather. I guess maybe it was very short-lived vernacular when coke and pcp were in full effect. 'Beam Me Up Scottie' is another one I love. 'Crack Attack' is my own personal creation.

Can't find anything on this Wack Attack record, so here's something about Disco Godfather...

(from cinema de merde):
So anyway, then DG attends an anti-angel dust rally whose theme is “Attack the Whack.” IT is supported by the all-female “Angels Against Dust,” where Carol Speed is giving a speech. I can only assume that Ms. Speed, who was in Abby and The Mack, is only here [and received second billing] for her name, as she only appears in this one scene. She obviously didn't spend much time learning her lines, as she advises the group that she wants to “Whack the attack against angel dust.” It's funnily realistic, as it perfectly, if unintentionally, captures the spirit of a public official who knows and cares nothing about a certain civic problem, and is on hand just to garner votes. Later, our friendly doctor says he wants to “Fight a thing that might save the lives of thousands of young people.” A second later Ms. Speed is heard chanting “attack the whack” when she is obviously not speaking at all. Apparently they didn't have the budget for reshoots on this scene, as it contains the absolute most errors of any part of the movie.

Unknown Artist - Depeche Mode Mega Mix Parts I/II

Unknown Artist - Depeche Mode Mega Mix Parts I/II
Label - ON-USound
Released - 1990 (bootleg/unofficial)
Style - Electronic/Synth-pop

Notes:
Part 1 contains: Everything Counts (In Larger Amounts), Shake The Disease, Blasphemous Rumors, People Are People, Leave In Silence, Flexible, Just Can't Get Enough (Live), Master And Servant (Remix).

Part 2 contains: Policy Of Truth (Capitol / Beat Box Mixes), Enjoy The Silence (Quad Mix), Everything Counts (Simenon / Saunders Remix), Strangelove (Pain Mix), Behind The Wheel, Personal Jesus.

* I picked this up at Orpheus a few weeks ago after seeing ON-USound printed on the label. Without even looking at it really, I got home and realized it said Clark/Gore/Clarke on the label as well. So it turned out to be some weird Depeche Mode megamix... I'm not the biggest DM fan but I do love a good bootleg if it's well done. And this is a proper megamix for 1990 as far as the beats/production etc. Definitely suggested for any DM fan...

Tracklisting:
A Mega Mix Part 1 (13:18)
B Mega Mix Part 2 (10:51)
