(from blaxploitation.com)
One of the undisputed classics of the blaxploitation soundtrack. The weak tracks, of which there are few, are massively outweighed by the sheer exuberance of the great funk material on the album. A guaranteed dancefloor monster, featuring a superb vocal number by The Four Tops at their peak, and simply magnificent keyboard-driven big band funk from Johnny Pate. An essential album.

(from moviegrooves.com)
It was only a matter of time before this beauty got a reissue - it's the classic Shaft in Africa soundtrack by Johnny Pate with a title song by The Four Tops.

Pate does a brilliant job with the Shaft in Africa soundtrack by combining explosive percussion-heavy funk and tender soul songs to give us one of the best blaxploitation soundtracks ever!

(from B1llb0ard)
The "ubiquitous hip-hop sample of the moment" award goes to the horn loop from Johnny Pate's "Shaft in Africa."

The track, from the 1973 soundtrack of the same name, is prominently featured in "Show Me What You Got," the lead single from Jay-Z's new "Kingdom Come" (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam), and "We Gon' Make It," the opening song from Diddy's recently released "Press Play" (Bad Boy).

* not to mention the horn and bongo breakdown in the middle of the track. Heavily sampled break in early hip hop records; the main record that comes to mind is Cookie Crew's 'Born This Way (Let's Dance)' from 1988. - xmp

10. The Mike Curb Congregation - Oh Happy Day (02:30)

(from blaxploitation.com)
This LP features music allegedly 'inspired by' one of the most offensive movies of all time. The Thing With Two Heads was a man with one white head and one black head. Needless to say, the movie was released through American International. However, the soundtrack contains tracks culled from the MGM/Pride catalog and appears to be effectively a compilation of tracks from other Pride LPs. It does feature two great instrumentals by The Incredible Bongo Band, 'Bongo Rock 72' and 'Bongolia', very hard to find elsewhere. The rest of the album is a mix of seventies soul and vocal numbers.

10. Harry Betts - Challenge and Battle [2:29]
11. Harry Betts - Ambust/Escape and Roundup [5:04]
12. Harry Betts - End Credits [0:57]

Plot:
Lee Daniels (portrayed by Pam Grier), a prostitute doing hard time in an island prison camp for women where the guards have a new way to punish inmates who fight: by cuffing them together. Chained to her bitter rival, white revolutionary Karen Brent (portrayed by Margaret Markov), Lee finds herself literally linked to the revolutionary cause, and on the fly, when Karen's guerilla friends stage a coup. But Lee has a cause of her own in the form of a secret stash of cash and a getaway boat. Brawling with her white counterpart over which way to go, she's got to make her escape, before both mamas' enemies bring them down.

Funky ass soundtrack! Harry Betts' score for Black Mama, White Mama is funky but fraught with dramatic tension. On Black Mama, White Mama, Latin percussion underscores episodic passages of mounting danger ("Police Check Point") and flight ("Bloodhounds").

Cold Lampin' with Flavor

I love PE so much its not even funny. Especially the old cracked-out Flavor Flav. New Flav is aiiight but I prefer the Basehead Syndrome version.

"Night of the Living Baseheads"

His solo tracks on various PE albums are some of my favorites. Cold Lampin' with Flavor in particular. I put some links up for the best of It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, but I find the lyrics are just hilarious when reading them alone...

Cold Lampin

I’m lampin, I’m lampin, I’m cole cole lampin
I got loowies boy, I’m not trampin
I just came from Da-crib ya know
I’m on the go-throw ya tank into metro

I'll take da dopest beat you got and I'll rock-it
Like chocolate, even vanilla - chocolate, strawberry, sasparilla
Flavors are electric - try me - get a shock-a
Didn't I tell you leave Flavor Flav alone, knock-a?
A clock on my chest proves I don't fess
I'm a clock-a, rock-a rockin' wit-da-rest
Flavor in da house by Chuck-D's side
Chuck got da Flavor-Flav don't hide
P.E. crazy, Crazy P.E. - makin' crazy loowies (?) for the shoppin spree

Ya eatin death cause ya like gittin dirt from da graveyard - ya put

Then ya pick ya teeth with tomb stone chips
And casket cover clips - dead women hips ya do da bump with - bones

Cedric Im Brooks & The Light Of Saba

Cedric Im Brooks & The Light Of Saba

Label - Honest Jon's Records
Released - 2003
Style - Dub, Roots, Reggae, Nyabinghi, Calypso, Jazz, Funk, Afro Funk, Disco, Lee Library

(from Astralwerks.com):
"Cedric "Im" Brooks’ is arguably the most innovative saxophone players in all of reggae music. His stunning fusion of jazz, Afro-beat, funk and Latin with reggae sets him apart as a true pioneer, radically altering the limits and expectations of what reggae music could sound like. Born in Jamaica, Cedric Brooks toured Caribbean hotels and clubs with various big bands and combos in the 1960's.

All the time, however, his own musical horizons - especially the breakthrough of new jazz - grew increasingly distant from the constrained, commercial music he had to play.

So when the chance came to visit America, Brooks eagerly accepted the opportunity. It was there that he became awe-struck by the music and vibes of jazz legend Sun Ra and Sonny Rollins. He was on the point of joining Sun Ra when the birth of his second daughter necessitated his return to Jamaica. Despite reggae being in full swing on the island, Cedric took up Sun Ra's challenge by moving beyond reggae's rocksteady beat by experimenting with free jazz and poetry, African robes and dancers. And so he formed his group The Light of Saba, taking leads from Hugh Masekela and Fela Kuti creating a multi-cultural 'world music' way ahead of its time.

The Light of Saba collects 18 Of Cedric Brooks' most exhilarating tracks blending African and US, Cuban and other West Indian influences - calypso and funk, rhumba, jazz bebop, nyabinghi and even '70s disco - on top of a foundation of sunny, warm reggae music. All the originals go for big bucks & are impossible to find. If you’ve never heard of Cedric Brooks before, then get ready to experience reggae in ways you never thought possible."

Tino - Tino's Dub Select

Label - Quatermass
Released - 2003
Style - Breaks, Dub, Dope Beats, Lee Library

Hello Friends, my name is Tino!

(from Forced Exposure):
"This essential collection of tracks is culled from the original albums in the 'Tino's Breaks' series, Volume 5 / Dub and Volume 6/ Halloween Dub on the Tino Corp. label -- tooled by co-producers Jack Dangers (Meat Beat Manifesto), Ben Stokes (D.H.S.) and Mike Powell (Bo Square). In the grand tradition of studio alchemists like Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo and Mad Professor, Tino and friends mingle deep deep basslines and fat effects but the furious funk still flows and the creative warp here is truly Tino's own stock in trade. Sample the homegrown and share it with a friend. Serving Tino's Dub Select, 'nicely toasted'. Tino Corp. is a record label founded by Jack Dangers and Ben Stokes dedicated to curating unique beats and sounds. As CEO and principal artist, Tino launched the label with a series of instructional albums called Tino's Breaks, which teach a new style of drumming with each installment. DJs test Tino records for scratching flexibility and overall funkiness, including DJ Krush, Cut Chemist, Nu-Mark (Jurassic Five), DJ Shadow, Z-Trip and DJ Quest. Tino Corp. is also affiliated with the Bay area turntablist collective, Future Primitive Sound whose 'associates' include Radar, Rob Swift, Faust & Shortee, Pam The Funktress (The Coup) and Romanowski."

Augustus Pablo - Rockers Meets King Tubbys In A Fire House

Augustus Pablo - Rockers Meets King Tubbys In A Fire House
Label - Shanachie
Released - 1980/1989 re-issue
Style - Reggae, Dub, Rockers, Lee Library

Another classic selection from the Lee Library cassette-only vaults. I've probably listened to this album well over 500 times in my life, and its one of those classic albums that gets better and better each time I hear it. Augustus Pablo left a lasting legacy of insanely good records - not just his own records, but other records and studios he's played for. His contribution to the Reggae world (and Music world in general) is monumental. Anytime you hear dancehall, reggae or dub music with melodica instrumentation - Augustus Pablo was the ORIGINAL. And the best.

Thanks / praises to the Lee for giving me a headstart on the real shit! I could have easily been stuck with an older brother who was lame and had no musical interest, but I got lucky!

(review from AMG):
As is often the case with albums that come from deep within the insular world of 1970s Kingston, the title of this one bears a little bit of explanation. "Rockers" was the nickname given to melodica player and producer Augustus Pablo; on this album, as on several other classics of the genre, he is teamed up with dub wizard Osbourne Ruddock (better known as King Tubby) to deliver a set of dub mixes derived from singles by Hugh Mundell, Delroy Williams, and others. (King Jammy, one of King Tubby's protégés, also contributes a few mixes here, but is uncredited.) "Fire House" is an ironic reference to the Waterhouse section of Kingston, where King Tubby's studio was located. On this collection, Pablo's sound predominates: his eerie melodica lines snake in and out of the mix, and the gentle-but-firm grooves that always typify a Rockers production are in full force. King Tubby contributes the special element of dubwise alchemy that was his own trademark, administering echo and delay at judicious intervals and keeping the general atmosphere mysterious and seductive. Because of the nature of the music and its consistently high quality, highlights are a bit difficult to pick out, but they include the very dread "Zion Is a Home" and the equally fine "Dub in a Matthews Lane Area," which could be used as a master class in dub technique.

Tracklist:
1 Rockers Meet King Tubbys In A Fire House
2 Short Man Dub
3 Zion Is A Home
4 Dub In A Matthews Lane Arena

This is a Lee Library classic selection. From the original cassette-only Lee Library collection! I'm talking Motorhead, Yngwie, X, old R.E.M, Eek-a-Mouse, Ozzy, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Steel Pulse etc.

These two Augustus Pablo tapes were highly influential to my musical development. They are two classic masterpieces; everyone needs to know how superb a musician, producer and songwriter Augustus Pablo really was. RIP Dr. Pablo.

Rastafari.

(review from AMG):
The best of the pure instrumental albums in Pablo's catalog, East of the River Nile finds the melodica master stretching out on various keyboards and strings as well on earthy, meditative tracks like "Chant to King Selassie I," "Jah Light," and "Natural Way." Though this is explicitly a non-dub occasion, "Natural Way" does get its own version with "Nature Dub." ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

V/A - I-Robots: Italo Electro Disco Underground Classics

V/A - I-Robots: Italo Electro Disco Underground Classics
Label - IRMA (Italy)
Recorded - Early 80s
Released - 2004
Style - Electronic, Electro, Italo-Disco, Lee Library

(from Dusty Groove):
A great look at an oft-neglected chapter of underground club -- the excellent electronic work coming out of Italy in the early 80s! The Italian approach to the music was certainly influenced by the sounds of New York, Germany, and England at the time -- but it also had its own flavor -- a kind of unabashed love of the dancefloor, and a subtle hope that disco would someday come again! The grooves on the set are all spare and electronic, but also quite infectious -- with a really strong focus on the hook, and a stripped-down sound that somehow makes them even more compelling. Titles include "Robot Is Systematic" by 'Lectric Workers, "Dance Boy Dance" by Alexander Robotnick, "Stranger In A Strange Land (club)" by NOIA, "Collision (rmx)" by Sphinx, "Pinguins Invasion (hot version)" by Scotch, "Plastic Doll (rmx inst)" by Dharma, "Walking In The Neon (club)" by Peter Richard, "Wonderful (inst)" by Klein & MBO, "I Need Love (inst)" by Capricorn, and "Spacer Woman (voc)" by Charlie.

AIR - Premiers Symptômes

AIR - Premiers Symptômes
Label - Source (FR)
Released - 1997
Style - Future Jazz, Space Rock, Lounge, Ambient, Electronic, Downtempo, Trip Hop

This EP is my favorite AIR production to date. Even after a million listens, it still sounds fresh. Classic 70s-style lounge instrumentation, excellent songwriting and very spacey pads/effects create gorgeous audio atmosphere. Standout tracks for me are "Modular Mix" and "Les Professionnels." But they're all superb.

(from AIR discographie):
A molecule of air is invisible and weightless and evasive to the hands grasp. Like the early singles of French band Air. Translucent and dreamlike and dispersed into the world between '95 and '97. Virtually impossible to get hold of. Until now. Premiers Symptomes is a collection of the gentle, fluid, langour of Air's first, perfectly formed, pieces. Featuring seven pre-Moon Safari moments in the evolution of Air. It includes "Modular," their musical gift to Le Corbusier's hypothetical Modular Man with its effervescent scrolls of Rhodes, like oxygen bubbles rising through water. "Casanova 70," a soothing, beatless ode to filmic sensualism. For "Californie": "We were imagining a man in the desert in California" says Jean Benoit Dunckel, "He was walking a lot and and he wanted to drink and he had no water. He is very thirsty and near to dying, suddenly he sees the long wide sea in front of him and he is very happy."

Produced before they had a studio, in Nicolas Godin's compact apartment, somewhere on a steep street in old Paris, these eloquent tracks articulate the innocence of Air's beginnings. "Premiers Symtomes was a sort of experimentation," muses JB. "It was a special, special time. When we made this record it was with very little equipment and we were completely unknown."

V/A - Gilles Peterson in Brazil
Label - Ether (UK)
Release - 2004
Style - Brazil, Bossa Nova, Samba, Electronic, Drum and Bass, Lee Library

(from Dusty Groove):
A soaring selection of Brazilian groove -- selected by the great Gilles Peterson -- one of the best collections ever assembled by the world famous DJ! Gilles goes way past the obvious for the sets, which are divided into two discs -- one for classic tracks (many of which are actually woefully under-appreciated, in the grand scheme) and a second disc of recent tracks and remixes. The mood is really soaring and soulful throughout -- groovy sambas mingle with Brazilian jazz and soul tunes, and cheeky psychedelia-steeped 60s sunshine on the first disc. The mood on disc two is wholly reverent of the samba roots, but it's also awash in modern club grooves -- with sputtering post drum & bass, a hip hop beat track sensibility on others, and a straight driving club groove on still others!

V/A - Catch Up Vol. 1

V/A - Catch Up Vol. 1
Label - Crippled Dick Hot Wax (DE)
Released - 2003
Recorded - 1975
Style - Soul, Funk, Jazz, Breaks, Lounge, Sound Library, Lee Library

(from Dusty Groove):
A classic bit of 70s funk from Germany -- and a long-lost treasure finally back out again on reissue! This rare 1975 set was the brainchild of 3 of Germany's funkiest jazz players -- drummer Charly Antolini, whose drums crackled on some of the best MPS recordings; keyboardist Max Greger Jr, who made some great straighter albums in the 60s; and bassist Milan Pilar, an electric player with a really warm and round tone. Together, the trio grooves through some excellent funky numbers -- really jamming with a soulful groove, as Greger switches effortlessly between piano, moog, Fender Rhodes, mellotron, and organ! Includes the funky break classic "Onkel Joe" -- plus gems like "Moonlight On a Bald Head", "Catch Up", "Blues For The Kaiser", "Lydia", and "Spinning Wheel". Their first album 'Catch Up' was recorded in 1975 in the legendary Munich Studios, for the label Calig. Rare Groove addicts consider this album as a speciality.

Recorded - ??? 1972-1976
Style - Latin, Bossa, South American, Funk, Percussion, Breaks, Peru, Trinidad, Lee Library

(from Crippled Dick site):
From the vaults of sound engineer jeff nieckau: rough beats from peru & trinidad 72-76 Who would imagine that hidden behind the exotic and sought after band Bossa 70 stands a sound engineer from Germany? His name is Gerhard Nieckau, nickname Jeff. In the early 60s he went to Africa, later to Peru and Trinidad to explore unknown musical territory , to record music and to fit studios. His trademark is a simple recording technique without frills, resulting in a pure, almost raw sound. All compiled pearls were found in his private archive, most of them published for the first time in Europe. The wide range reaches from Calypso to Funk, from Jazz to Roots Beats. Amongst the uncompromisingly devoted version of Aretha Franklins THINK and Baden Powells BIRIMBAO by BOSSA 70, Lou Donaldsons CATERPILLA and Fela Kutis BLACK MANS CRY interpreted by THE GAY FLAMINGOS STEEL BAND. World music as well as rare groove fans will be surprised how diverse, modern and powerfully danceable this kind of music can be and how refreshing the influence of traditional music styles.

Willie Hutch - Foxy Brown OST [1975]

Willie Hutch - Foxy Brown OST
Label - Motown
Released - 1974
Style - Funk, Breaks, Blaxploitation, Soundtrack, Soul

This is another one of my favorite Blaxploitation-era (i hate calling it that, but it is what it is) funk soundtracks. I've recognized little bits and pieces from various hip-hop and R&B songs that were made much later, but the one that really sticks out is from 'Out There.' The intro to that track and the distant "Out There" echoed sample I've heard in more than one production. Great funky, sleazy stuff!

(from Dusty Groove):
A monster! Foxy Brown is Willie Hutch's magnificent soundtrack for Foxy Brown -- a Pam Grier blacksploitation film from the early 70s -- and it's pure genius all the way through, a record filled with some of the best funky soundtrack cuts of the era! Willie's got a real Curtis Mayfield sound here -- with a dope mixture of full orchestrations and heavy funk, guitar riffing away as drums snap tightly across the album's best rhythms! Includes the classic funky numbers "Ain't That Mellow Mellow" and "Give Me Some of that Good Old Love" -- plus "Whatever You Do", "Foxy Lady", "You Sure Know How To Love Your Man", "Theme Of Foxy Brown", "Out There", and "Chase".

Tracklisting:
1 Chase (2:30)
2 Theme Of Foxy Brown (2:24)
3 Overture Of Foxy Brown (0:57)
4 Hospital Prelude Of Love Theme (2:50)

Herbie Hancock - The Spook Who Sat By The Door OST [1973]

Herbie Hancock - The Spook Who Sat By The Door OST
Label - UAR
Released - 1973
Style - Jazz, Funk, Breaks, Blaxploitation, Weird, Abstract, Soundtrack, Herbie!

This one is really strange. When I copped this, some of the tracks sounded like they were recorded straight off a TV speaker or something. So I put the tracks through some audio processing to even out the levels, and now it sounds much better. Just an FYI if a couple of the tracks sound different... This soundtrack is just too cool not to clean up and share! Some of Herbie's best (and most obscure) work to date, in my opinion. I'm a freak for anything Herbie or Miles from the '69 to '78 period, so I couldn't pass this up. Hopefully others agree...

(from Dusty Groove):
A legendary soundtrack by the great Herbie Hancock -- super-rare, and super-dope, and super-funky! The film itself is a really righteous tale about a disenchanted Vietnam vet who infiltrates the CIA, learns its tricks, and uses them to start the coming revolution -- and Herbie's score for the film is every bit as bold and powerful as the movie itself! The music's got loads and loads of heavy keyboards -- sometimes distorted and noisy, as on some of Herbie's own work of the time -- sometimes smooth and sweet, with a tasty Fender Rhodes sound -- but always tight, jazzy, and funky! The soundtrack does a good job of including background noises, sound effects, and snippets of dialogue from the film -- and there's also a few mysterious bonus bits, which seem to come from other sources, but which fit in well with the sound of the overall album! The whole thing makes for an ultra-cool listening experience that's served up in a number of dimensions -- and titles include "The Big Rip Off", "Revenge", "At The Lounge", "Training Day", "The Stick Up", and "It Begins".

*tracklisting is a bit weird, so bear with me...

Dennis Coffey - Black Belt Jones OST [1974]
Label - Warner
Released - 1975
Style - Blaxploitation, Funk, Soundtrack, Breaks

(from Dusty Groove):
Finally -- the long overdue release of one of the funkiest soundtracks ever! The music to Black Belt Jones has always been the stuff of legend -- mostly only issued as a promo single back in the 70s, but funky enough that it's ranked among the best soundtracks of the decade! The score was composed and performed by Dennis Coffey and Luchi De Jesus -- the former a funk star in his own right, the latter the composer of the ultra-hip Friday Foster soundtrack -- and together, the pair have crafted some killer grooves that mix guitars, congas, and blasting orchestrations that could plow Enter The Dragon into the dust! Plus, the soundtrack nicely mixes together bits of dialogue and sound effects from the film -- making things sound a lot like some of those cool Japanese Bruce Lee soundtracks that were floating around from years back. Titles include "Love Theme", "At The Beach", "Main Theme", "Opening Theme", "Drama", "Mafia Theme", and "Sexy".

Francis Lai - L'Aventure c'est L'Aventure OST [1972]

Francis Lai - L'Aventure c'est L'Aventure OST [1972]

Hopefully nobody at Fuzzy has posted this already/recently... my apologies if they have. This is a vinyl rip, and the original vinyl recording for this soundtrack goes for about EUR 85.00 !

(Review from here):

One of Francis Lai's more sought-after 1970s scores, this album may not be that hard to find but is almost always expensive because it features an otherwise-unavailable track by French pop legend Johnny Hallyday. That's a pity, because this album is a really tight, madly funky soundtrack with some killer beats, breaks, funk tracks, drums and Rhodes. The main theme is reprised throughout the album, which is a good thing because the melody is tight, punchy and insistent, so suits Christian Gaubert's funk arrangements perfectly. Plenty of serious funk instrumental business for sampling or playing out - highly recommended.

Music composed by Francis Lai.

Stu Allen - Best of '89 Hip Hop [UK Radio Key 103]

Thanks to my new buddy Craig, I've dug this old Stu Allen Best of 1989 mix [Key 103, Manchester] out. It is one of the best compilations of raw hip-hop from pre-1990 era. This just reaffirms my position that UK radio has been ahead of the pack for years.

Here in the states, we would potentially begin catching up if only we could convince the FCC to go back to their original position - what they were created for back in the 1930s.

This blurb from wiki sums up how corrupt they have been allowed to become. Public airwaves should have always been For The People and used By The People. One scroll through the FM dial in Washington, DC will leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. I hardly ever venture past 95.5 FM.

Beginning in 1994, commercial spectrum has been allocated via competitive auctions rather than the previous method of "best public use." This was a cumbersome bureaucratic process in which competitors attempted to show that they were most capable of making best public use of the license they wished to obtain. The structure and licenses available in each auction are determined by vote of the Commission, with the licenses awarded to the highest bidders. Auctions are usually conducted on a simultaneous multiple-round basis, with all offered licenses being auctioned at the same time. Auctions proceed in bidding rounds of decreasing duration until no more bids are received. Revenues are deposited in the US Treasury to be spent by Congress.

So anyways, thanks Craig for putting this tracklist together. I think a number of people will appreciate this oldschool contribution. FYI - Craig has a couple of mixes on his site that impress me beyond belief. And I'm *very* picky about mixes I support. These are just in their own category of quality. So good! grab them - I LoveDisko and I LoveSurprises @ http://www.musicfromspeakers.com/.

*my favorite of the two is I LoveSurprises. Unbelievably good.

(From Dusty Groove):
"One of the greatest compilations of Brazilian music you could ever hope to buy -- a brilliant selection of classic tunes, put together by DJs Gilles Peterson & Joe Davis as an introduction to the rich sounds of Brazil! The scope is amazing -- a real blend of numbers that represent the best that Brazil has to offer, and which goes past the usual bossa-heavy type of compilation you'd find in the US. Here, the grooves know no boundaries -- and run from jazzy, to baroque, to funky, breezy, folksy, and beyond. Many of the tracks on the set have still not been reissued in any other form, and even though the compilation's nearly a decade old, it's still one of the first we'd recommend to anyone wanting a great set of Brazilian music!"

Walter Wanderley - When It Was Done

Walter Wanderley - When It Was Done
Label - A&M/CTI (Japan)
Released - 1968
Style - Brazil, Funk, Bossa Groove, Jazz, Lee Library

(From Dusty Groove):
An amazing leap forward for the incredible Walter Wanderley -- a record that has him mixing his earlier bossa groove with the wider vision of late 60s A&M/CTI -- supported by an amazing cast of American and Brazilian artists! The vibe is wonderful from the very first note -- a refinement of bossa with the more sophisticated scoring touches of CTI -- arrangements from both Deodato and Don Sebesky, working wonderfully to support Wanderley's lead keyboard lines on organ and electric harpsichord! The record's arguably more sophisticated than most work of this nature coming from Brazil at the same time -- and with classic production by Creed Taylor, the sound is sublime through and through! A few tracks feature a slight bit of vocals -- from Milton Nascimento, Anamaria Valle, and others -- and instrumentalists helping on the session include Hubert Laws on flute and Marvin Stamm on flugelhorn. Titles include great versions of "Open Your Arms", "When It Was Done", "Reach Out For Me", "Ponteio", "Surfboard", "Baiao Da Garoa", "Capoeira", and "Ole Ole Ola".

Walter Wanderley - Moondreams

Walter Wanderley - Moondreams
Label - A&M/CTI (Japan)
Released - 1969
Style - Jazz, Bossa Nova, Brazil, Funk, Lee Library

(From Dusty Groove):
Walter Wanderley opens up wonderfully on both organ and electric harpsichord here -- going for a very different sound than on his earlier records, and with plenty of great late 60s CTI touches! The music is as heavenly as you might guess from the title -- a dreamy recasting of Brazilian bossa modes with some of the sunnier 60s touches of the A&M scene -- all wrapped together with impeccable arrangements both from Deodato and Wanderley himself. The record mixes a bit of strings with a sweet chorus of flutes and just a bit of trumpet -- all undercut by some snapping rhythms that include a bit of percussion from Airto, plus occasional chorus vocals sung by Flora Purim and Stella Stevens! The mix of players, modes and sounds here is really wonderful -- and makes for a unique album that propels the older 60s bossa sound firmly towards the more sophisticated modes of the 70s -- all at a level that Wanderley never hit again in the studio! Titles include great versions of Marcos Valle's "Proton, Electron, Neutron", Egberto Gismonti's "O Sonho (Moondreams)", Luiz Gonzaga's "Asa Branca", and Young-Holt Unlimited's classic "Soulful Strut" -- plus "Penha", "L'Amore Dice Ciao", "5:30 Plane", and "Mirror Of Love".

Label - A&M/CTI (Japan)
Released - 1967
Style - Bossa Nova, Jazz, Brazil, Lee Library

(From here):
Notes: Known more for his "Ipanema" and "Samba" tunes Jobim has a way of bringing the Brazilian night into a jazz framework and making both partners happy about the situation. Relaxing, soft music with the underlying rhythm and sway of the breeze or the water upon the sand. The "Boss of the Bossa Nova" with his large backing ensemble makes beautiful music here for all to enjoy. I'm not sure how the giraffe photo fits into the picture, but I first found the green cover and a little later came across the red one. A good record in either shade.

(from Dusty Groove):
An incredible record -- from the first off-key note to the last! The album's filled with some wonderfully moody LA studio sounds, arranged by Deodato, and a has a great swirling mix of sound that weaves around Jobim's lofty guitar and piano. From the first note, you can feel the strange magic of Jobim and Deodato at work -- as the album appears to be smooth and mellow, yet has a strangely unsettling undertone that keeps us coming back after all these years! Tracks include "Tema Jazz", "Carinhoso", "Rockanalia", and a nice remake of "Girl From Ipanema". Plus, the CD features 4 bonus alternate versions, including an 8 minute take of "Tema Jazz"!

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Stone Flower

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Stone Flower
Label - A&M/CTI (Japan)
Released - 1970
Style - Jazz, Bossa Nova, Latin, Brazil, Lee Library

(from Dusty Groove):
One of Antonio Carlos Jobim's greatest records -- and a perfect blend of his subtle bossa genius with the moody electric sound of CTI! Jobim plays electric and acoustic piano, guitar, and sings a bit -- and Deodato handled the arrangements with a breezy brilliance that matches all the magic of Jobim's wonderful compositions, but gives them a slightly more fluid feel too -- in a way that's somewhat more sophisticated than the sound of Jobim's previous CTI outings -- Tide and Wave. Other players on the album include Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, and Airto on percussion -- and there's a great mix of Brazilian and American styles on the set -- electric, sinister, breezy, and always wonderful! Includes the titles "Sabia", "God & The Devil In The Land Of The Sun", "Children's Games", "Stone Flower", "Brazil", "Tereza My Love", and "Choro".

Tracklist:
1. Tereza My Love
2. Children's Games
3. Choro
4. Brazil
5. Stone Flower
6. Amparo
7. Andorinha

(From Dusty Groove):
A million-seller, but also a record that no home should be without -- and easily one of THE greatest keyboard albums of the 70s! The album's the one that features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" -- soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too -- and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole".

Tracklist:
1 Also Sprach Zarathustra (9:01)

Deodato - Deodato 2

Deodato - Deodato 2
Label - CTI Records
Released - 1973
Style - Jazz, Funk, Latin, Brazil, Lee Library

(From Dusty Groove):
A killer batch of grooves that's among some of the best work by Brazilian keyboard giant Eumir Deodato! The record takes off where Deodato's hit Prelude album left off -- and features an even better set of long jazz funk groovers that are filled with tasty keyboard licks and some very nice funky riffs! Features the massive Latin funk track "Super Strut", plus the tunes "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Skyscrapers", and a great version of "Nights In White Satin".

Tracklist:
1 Super Strut (8:57)
2 Rhapsody In Blue (8:46)

4 Pavane For A Dead Princess (4:06)

PMX DJs - Rave Face mix

Holding off on new album posts for a couple days due to super busy schedule. But I just finished my first official Ableton-oriented dj mix, so I think I'll post it up.

People still say doing a DJ mix with Ableton is 'cheating' but that's a kettle of bullshit. Although you might not be touching vinyl on Technics turntables, it's a hell of a lot more work than doing a vinyl mix. And if you don't have an ear for mixing records, you won't miraculously become a mindblowing DJ with Ableton overnight. The basic fundamentals of proper old school mixing still apply, like programming and EQ. Can't have two basslines compete for the same frequency space while in the mix! A proper DJ needs to have an ear for tone, key and pitch to a certain extent. Most importantly, a proper DJ needs to know how to beatmatch. And that's not something you pick up overnight. All this stuff applies in the realm of Ableton Live if you're working on a DJ mix.

I could crank out a turntable mix in a couple hours. This Ableton mix took me 3 weeks. Little bit here, little bit there. My main point was to focus on dopeness and throw out the notion of allegiance to any particular genre. Those days are over. Now it's time to initiate musical gangbangs without falling prey to the hyped-up "mash-up" bullshit. I know mixing Jay Z with the Beatles is so totally shocking, but try creating something new that goes beyond the confines of irony. Anyways, here's the joint. Hopefully other people will be into it as much as I am!

RAVE FACE FAQ:
Anyone who was heavy into the rave scene back in the 90s should be familiar with the Rave Face phenomenon. It's basically after a night of heavy raving, either when the sun's come up or they turn the fluorescent lights on all bright to get people out. Although not exclusive to dark and dirty warehouses, those venues had the best Rave Face results. Look around at everyone - see that girl over there looking all fucked up, shaking? RAVE FACE. OMG is that dude chewing through his bottom lip? RAVE FACE.

bad cops must wear Hello Kitty armbands

just saw this on yahoo news. I give it a 9/10 for newsworthiness.

BANGKOK, Thailand - Thai police officers who break rules will be forced to wear hot pink armbands featuring "Hello Kitty," the Japanese icon of cute, as a mark of shame, a senior officer said Monday.

Police officers caught littering, parking in a prohibited area, or arriving late — among other misdemeanors — will be forced to stay in the division office and wear the armband all day, said Police Col. Pongpat Chayaphan. The officers won't wear the armband in public.

The striking armband features Hello Kitty sitting atop two hearts.

"Simple warnings no longer work. This new twist is expected to make them feel guilt and shame and prevent them from repeating the offense, no matter how minor," said Pongpat, acting chief of the Crime Suppression Division in Bangkok.

"(Hello) Kitty is a cute icon for young girls. It's not something macho police officers want covering their biceps," Pongpat said.

He said police caught breaking the law will be subject the same fines and penalties as any other members of the public.

"We want to make sure that we do not condone small offenses," Pongpat said, adding that the CSD believed that getting tough on petty misdemeanors would lead to fewer cases of more serious offenses including abuse of power and mistreatment of the public by police officers.

V/A - SoHo Lounge Heat

V/A - SoHo Lounge Heat
Label - EMI
Recorded - 60s/70s
Style - Movie Grooves, Crime-Funk, Funk, Soul, Jazz, Dope, Chill, Lee Library

*NOT TO BE SLEPT ON.

(from Score Baby):
The title -- Soho Lounge Heat -- makes this top shelf collection of library music from Cavendish and Boosey & Hawkes studios circa 1969-77 sound like some nu-jazz "chill" collection for the night spot du jour. But be not detered, Soho Lounge Heat delivers cinematic funky grooves of the highest order.

Composed and arranged primarily by Dennis Farnon (along with Trevor Duncan, John Cacavas, Pete Moore, John Scott and Sam Fonteyn), the set may span '69-'77, but the bulk comes from '72 and '74.

Fans of sound library collections like Luke Vibert's Nuggets, Le Jazzbeat, Stereo Ultra and Stroboscopica will really dig this EMI release. There's plenty of throbbing bass, funky drums and a jazzy cinematic vibe that just won't quit.

Some of the titles are telling: "The Trackers," "The Big Score," "Acapulco Connection," "Border Incident," "Shanghai Caper," "The Armenian File," and so on. This is the soundtrack for the movie in your mind.

Electro Keyboard Orchestra

Electro Keyboard Orchestra - Self-Titled
Label - Columbia
Released - 1975
Style - Jazz, Funk, Analog, Synthesizers, Electronic, Experimental, Lee Library

(from movin-ent)
The Electro Keyboard Orchestra was a Japanese group featuring eight keyboard players, all on Korg synthesizers. Specifically, they're using two early models, the MiniKorg 700S and the MaxiKorg 800DV, twenty of them shared amongst the group. Though there's also a super-tight rhythm section, the songs are obviously dominated by the keys. Among the highlights are a cover of Quincy Jones's "Ironside" theme and a fantastic original, "The Soaring Sea Gull." With so many different synth layers combining to create melodies and bass grooves, we can only imagine how amazing their live show must have been! The most synth players we've recorded simultaneously is a meager six, but we're doing our best to carry on the tradition of heavy analog funk.

Piero Umiliani - To-day's Sound

Piero Umiliani - To-day's Sound
Label - Easy Tempo
Released - 1997
Style - Funk, Soul, Jazz, Latin, Samba, Lounge, Easy Listening, Music Library, Lee Library

Notes (from Movie Grooves)
A welcome repressing of another of Piero Umiliani's fantastic library records from the early 70s when he established his own publishing company and studios (also see The Man and the City).

The original LP, only pressed in 300 copies exchanges hands for about $500 or more. Some of the tracks on To-Day's Sound were used in movies; apparently the track "Open Space" is used at the start of Baba Yaga (1973).

(from Dusty Groove)
More fantastic wild stuff by this Italian genius! This CD is filled with cool groovy little cuts featuring the maestro himself on moog, Fender Rhodes, and marimba -- plus instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, and Lowry and Hammond organs. Even more wild than the classic Sweden Heaven & Hell LP, with cool little cuts like "Safari Club", "Free Dimension", "Truck Driver", and "Music on the Road". Wonderful stuff from 1971 -- and another reason why the forces of time and space are converging on the late 90's to make this the best time ever to sample groovy music from around the globe!

Demand determines offer ...and there have been many demands! After releasing the first Popshopping Compilation one of the most frequent questions was "...and when will part 2 come?"

Therefore Senor 45 and Sir d'Oeuvre went again to the dusty tape and flexidisc archives of well-known German jazz composers, flexi-collectors and ad specialists. They fetched back 26 further powerful advertising hits, from cocoa cha cha, over cigarillo swing to the shoe shoe twist. Pop and Beat songs in the manner of economic miracle heydays. Album comes again with extensive linernotes, fullcolor booklet and all the orginal cover art.

V/A - Beat Vol. 1: Lounge at Cinevox
Label - Crippled Dick Hot Wax!
Date Recorded - 1967-1979
Style - Funk, Soul, Soundtrack, Music Library, Funk, Jazz, Lee Library

(from Score Baby)
CripDick's three volumes of "raunchy, erotic filmmusic from the vaults of Italian 60s & 70s cinema" are indispensable to fans of groovy soundtracks. Each volume offers up such musicmakers as Riz Ortolani, Bruno Nicolai, Piero Piccioni and Armando Trovaioli, just to name a few. And, like every CripDick release, these are copiously illustrated and feature incisive liner notes. It would be difficult to rate each volume seperately, since each disc has its share of outstanding jazz funk sleaze and a track or two of lounge filler.

Volume 1's highlights include Teo Usuelli's "Piacere Sequence" and Picconi's "Traffic Boom", both of which were used in the Coen Brother's movie The Big Lebowski in a suitably sleazy context.

Excellent lost funky work from Italy! The Barigozzi Group were one of these obscure little combos that churned out tight funky tracks for bigger outfits -- very much in the style of I Gres, Marc 4, or some of the other great Italian groups that are being discovered lately. Their strength was a great keyboard sound, augmented by some wonderfully produced guitars, nicely flanged or wah-wahed, and some excellent drums, played in a nice tight stiffly rhythmic style. This package includes a whopping 21 cuts pulled from 3 lost alubms -- all wrapped up in a wonderful looking cover that's one of the nicest Easy Tempo have dropped on us to date! Titles include "Tarzan Dance", "Blue Hairs", "Silver Legs", "Ivory Breast", "Black Heart", "Theme For Aretha", "Hong Kong Wind", and "Message From the Jungle". Great stuff!

(from Score Baby)
Although the music collected on The Optical Sound isn't soundtrack music per se, it clearly falls into the related camp of Sound Library.

Fans of the Easy Tempo series will recognize three of the 21 tracks here from Vol. 2: Psycho Beat. All three came from one of the original records collected on this Barigozzi Group collection. The tracks "Silver Legs" "Red Face" and "Violet Lips" come from Woman's Colours, which was originally released on Minstrel. The other records collected here are Rock in the Air and The Tropicals, both of which were released on Jump. Though the original release dates aren't noted, all could be dated in that critical period of the late 60s, early 70s.

Most of the tracks adhere to a no nonsense groovy loungecore sensibility. The group's sound boasts soulful organ and piano, tight brass, raspy flute, rolling electric bass lines and crisp funky drumming. And the stuff from The Tropicals has an exotica feel in the arrangements.

From Dusty Groove:
A beautiful bit of 70's grooviness from one of our favorite Italian composers! This set brings together 2 extremely rare soundtracks by the great Alberto Baldan Bembo, and they're both a fantastic mix of Fender Rhodes piano, vibes, wah wah guitar, and stunningly sensuous orchestrations. All of the tracks are more lively than the ones on the other Bembo reissue we've stocked, but they're no less captivating, and have the kind of haunting quality that makes the best of these Italian 70's sessions so great. V/A - Le Jazzbeat! Vol. 1

V/A - Le Jazzbeat! Vol. 1 (Jerk, Jazz & Psychobeat de France)
Label - Jazzman
Released - 1999
Style - Electronic, Lounge, Acid Jazz, Jerk, Breakbeat, Music Library, Lee Library

Notes (from Jazzman)
The archives of the French music libraries contain some of the most startling and original compositions of modern times. During the '60s and '70s many of the France's most innovative composers and musicians joined together to showcase their amazing talents by writing and performing music to accompany French film, TV and radio broadcasts. Much of the style of this music was conceived during the time of the Paris riots of '68; the psychedelic movement was in full swing and world politics were undergoing an upheaval. This in turn led to a period of enormous creativity in nearly all musical genres, and many of the most radical moments of 20th century music were created during this time. This album reflects some of these moments and concentrates on the phenomenal jazzy beats and grooves that emerged from France from 1968 through the '70s. One of these music libraries was Musique pour l'Image (MPI) from which the tracks for 'Le Jazzbeat' were taken. MPI was created in Paris 1968 by mad-about-jazz Robert Viger, a little-known pianist and composer. Viger had previously confined his jazz to sessions with friends but in the prevailing mood decided to record his work and use jazz-based music in the increasingly popular media of film and TV. He created the MPI label to produce a series of recordings using his friends and the musicians he knew to make the music. The musical policy always had a jazzy flavour to it - whether it was a modern jazz ensemble or a small group experimenting with the latest electronic instruments. The records were manufactured in very short runs on 10" or 12" vinyl before being sent to broadcasting houses, advertising agencies and the like. Until now the music has never been available to the public as it could only be heard backing TV ads or scenes in French movies. It's Robert Viger's untainted vision that has produced this cutting-edge music which has both spanned and created sub-genres. Using only the latest recording techniques available at the time and many of France's most visionary and talented artists, it's the serious quality on offer that's the key to the appeal of this music.

(Review from Scorebaby)
Will we ever get enough of funky French library music? Of course not. This Jazzman set is billed as "jerk, jazz and psycho beat de France" from the French label Musique pour L'Image (MPI), founded in Paris 1968 by "mad about jazz" Robert Viger. It's all music recorded for use in random TV, film and radio programs.

Le Jazzbeat's thirteen tracks of catchy, soul-inflected, breakbeat grooves are hardly enough. There isn't a stinker in the bunch, which favors the work of Vladimir Cosma and Claude Vasari.

Each track comes with a helpful description, sure to please sample-happy DJs. "Turbine" features "weird repetitive wah and electronic sounds." "Punching Ball" features "quirky organ thing with flip-top bongo." And so on.

Tracklisting:
1 Richard Eldwin - Binairement (3:02)
2 Vladimir Cosma - Ultra Pop'op (2:26)
